Wicked Words review

This book is great fun to read because it has words that one would not have thought to at one time or another to be so bad as to be considered a curse word. This is not a book to let an elementary school kid read because there are words that one may not want a third grader to know. The book is educational for grown-ups though because it teaches one the origin and history of the words that it contatins and is often rather entertaining as well. I deffinately recommend this book to those who would enjoy learning the origin and history of words considered to be profanity and not approprate for public print.

I think that this is the best of all of Terry Deary's books, though they are all excellent. I love to read and am very interested in the history of words, so I especially enjoyed this book. It is funny, interesting, and easy to read. I highly recommend it to people of all ages.

It's a 10 star book

I read this book about 5 years ago and I still find myself going back to it when I feel a little down or discouraged. This book will make you realize that there is a whole different "level" out there or maybe one of our "senses" that most of us don't know we have--kind of like new planets that astronomers "find" but have actually always been there. That's a little deep but, believe me, this book makes a person understand that "we" all hold ourselves back because that special ingredient that we are all looking for is already possessed by us all........we only have to just dare ourselves to reach inside of ourselve and use it and reach for our goals....mental goals, spiritual goals, health goals, physical goals and oh yes, the material goals will follow. Read this one, you'll be a better "you" and you will realize how special you are.

Highly inspirational and motivational

Dare to Dream by Florence Littauer

This book started off on a high note. I love how the author gives lots of stories of success and even touches on the subject of reading to educate yourself (which is along the lines of this personal reading journey of mine). About halfway through the book, it gets not as exciting. Florence is a HUGE believer in the 4 personality themes inspired by Hippocrates. She spends more than enough chapters going through a personality exam, how to recognize the personalities, testing you on them, explaining them again and again until it feels like she is beating a dead horse. She talks a lot about her brother who is a famous DJ in TX. He is a success story and I enjoyed reading about his life however she seems to beat this dead horse as well. I did find some of the information helpful but it's a little jagged and hops all over the place. By the middle of the book...I forgot I was reading a book with the subtitle of "Beat the odds and win personal success" and thought maybe I was transported to a book on the personalities of political figures through the ages. Although Littauer provides information on focusing on a goal, expanding your vocabulary, following your dream, and inspires you through true stories...I don't feel that I have taken much away from reading the book. It could have done better in my opinion or perhaps should have been more appropriately titled. I do like Florence though..and her little ramblings. She is humorous in a soft delightful manner.
UPDATE: I have noticed that this book stuck out to me over the last couple of days prior to posting this. I have been thinking more and more about Florence's inspirations of Creating the Dream, Preparing for the Dream, Wearing the Dream, and Sharing the Dream. I have decided that I liked this more than I initially did. I would recommend reading it. I am actually looking forward to coming across more of Florence's books.

Disappointed

I really wanted to like this book. I was hoping it would be similar to "The Screw Tape Letters" or other novels about spiritual entities. The origin of Satan and/or the fall of Lucifer is a fascinating topic and there is wonderful potential for a novel about that. The Bible actually says very little about that, and scholars are widely divided on the origin of Satan. But this work is a novel, so it is not bound by being biblical accuracy. It presents only one perspective, but again, that is okay in a novel. It is not a theological text book.

What "Lucifer's Flood" is, is a first person account from a minor and whining angel who witnesses but does not really take part in much of the alleged rebellion in heaven. That angel gets "dragged along" I guess, and is part of the 1/3 of all heaven which was swept away by the dragon's tail. Countless complaints, questions, and sniveling make the character unappealing and tiresome in reading.

The characters were not engaging. I made no connection with any of the characters at all. In fact. I was hoping some would get "killed off" or something just to get rid of them.

The dialogue was marginal.

The plot was thin and left me wanting more.

I found the portrayal of God lacking, and that was troubling.

Overall, I was disappointed.

A light, fun take on Biblical Fiction.

Lucifer's Flood is not a serious book of Biblical philosophy or theology. The demon writer of the tale is really a pathetic little thing who is more to be pitied than feared. Hardly the typical portrayal of a demon. This demon doesn't represent any GREAT evil, though he does represent something wrong with society. The more common evil that is lukewarmness. A wishy washy sort. The kind of person who stands for nothing and goes with the flow. For example, this nameless demon sides with Lucifer during the rebellion only because he thought God would be merciful if He won, and Lucifer would surely destroy all who opposed him if he were the Victor. And so he sided with what he himself calls a "Madman". It didn't turn out how he expected. The demon spends much of the book wondering, even begging to know why God is so merciful with man's indiscretions but cannot give the same forgiveness to the fallen angels.

If you are a person that is very jealous of accuracy in Biblical tales, this book may aggravate you. The author takes quite a bit of license when describing certain Biblical events. People who demand that writers stick to the Biblical versions of the stories will much prefer "Demon: A Memoir" by Tosca Lee.

But, if you are looking for something more fun and still heartwarming, this book will appeal to you. The author DOES have many good points and thought provoking moments here and there.

Interesting perspective . . .

I recently joined a book club and this was our second reading. This story is narrated by a "reluctant demon" who tells what happened between God and the fallen angels from his perspective. I love how the author links theory and STAAD usage. Most books out there are either merely on the theory side, or on the merely on software usage side. But this book, just effectively bridges the two aspects.

Grade 9 Up-This volume in the producer's continuing series includes four detective stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The British reader, David Timson, is easy to understand and paces his delivery nicely, varying his tone slightly to distinguish among characters. "A Case of Identity," "The Adventure of the Crooked Man," "The Naval Treaty," and "The Greek Interpreter" are all tales in which the appearances of those with whom Holmes must deal, in order to assist his various clients with their problems, are most deceiving. In the first story, a young woman comes to the detective heartbroken at the disappearance of her fianc? en route to their wedding. The background Doyle used to create the second story is historically correct, borrowing from the event of a real mutiny that occurred in India while Britain ruled there. Diplomacy takes center stage in the third tale, in which an important government document is missing. The last story includes he character of Holmes' brother, who is perhaps even brighter than the great detective, but not as worldly nor as sensitive. The political nature of much of the content here women's rights, colonialism, diplomacy, and international intrigue makes this a good collection to suggest to students who are developing a sense of history as a guide to both the present and the future in the affairs of society and state.

David Timson has performed in modern and classic plays across the country and abroad including Wild Honey for Alan Ayckborne, Hamlet, The Man of Mode, and the Seagull. Has has been seen on TV in Nelson's Column and Swallows and Amazons. A familiar and versatile audio and radio voice, he reads The Middle Way and performs in Hamlet and A Midsummer Night's Dream for Naxos AudioBooks and is the author of The History of Theatre. This is his fourth volume of Sherlock Holmes stories for Naxos AudioBooks.

David Timson applies a cultured British accent and sparkly wry tones to four classic Sherlock Holmes stories: "A Case of Identity," "The Adventure of the Crooked Man," "The Naval Treaty," and "The Greek Interpreter." At times sly, at times somber, he shifts from one character to another with ease, changing accents and timbre as appropriate. Holmes stories have been interpreted many times in recent years--even George Takei, Captain Sulu from "Star Trek," had a go at it. Timson is among the better narrators, giving one the feeling of having heard something authentic from gas-lit London. For Lovers Of Holmes

Though not necessarily the best Sherlock Holmes stories, David Timson does a wonderful job bringing flavor and color to stories of our favorite Victorian "consulting detective." Picturing the flat at 221B Baker Street and 19th century London is easy through Watson's naratives and Timson's excellent voice characterizations. David Timson does the best readings among all the Sherlock Holmes audio books I own. I highly recommend any Holmes story read by David Timson.
