Seven white men, armed with knives and shotguns, ordered the young woman into their green Chevrolet, raped her, and left her for dead. The president of the local NAACP branch office sent his best investigator and organizer to Abbeville. Her name was Rosa Parks. In taking on this case, Parks launched a movement that ultimately changed the world.

The author gives us the never-before-told history of how the civil rights movement began; how it was in part started in protest against the ritualistic rape of black women by white men who used economic intimidation, sexual violence, and terror to derail the freedom movement; and how those forces persisted unpunished throughout the Jim Crow era when white men assaulted black women to enforce rules of racial and economic hierarchy. Black women’s protests against sexual assault and interracial rape fueled civil rights campaigns throughout the South that began during World War II and went through to the Black Power movement. The Montgomery bus boycott was the baptism, not the birth, of that struggle.

At the Dark End of the Street describes the decades of degradation black women on the Montgomery city buses endured on their way to cook and clean for their white bosses. It reveals how Rosa Parks, by 1955 one of the most radical activists in Alabama, had had enough. “There had to be a stopping place,” she said, “and this seemed to be the place for me to stop being pushed around.” Parks refused to move from her seat on the bus, was arrested, and, with fierce activist Jo Ann Robinson, organized a one-day bus boycott.

The protest, intended to last twenty-four hours, became a yearlong struggle for dignity and justice. It broke the back of the Montgomery city bus lines and bankrupted the company.

We see how and why Rosa Parks, instead of becoming a leader of the movement she helped to start, was turned into a symbol of virtuous black womanhood, sainted and celebrated for her quiet dignity, prim demeanor, and middle-class propriety—her radicalism all but erased. And we see as well how thousands of black women whose courage and fortitude helped to transform America were reduced to the footnotes of history.

Danielle L. McGuire’s At the Dark End of the Street provides an excellent examination of the Civil Rights Movement and the history of sexual assault against black women. Assistant Professor of History at Wayne State University, McGuire analyzes the ritualization of sexual assault and its use as a weapon to maintain white superiority. McGuire has successfully written a compelling and thought-provoking work that truly adds another dimension to the study of the Civil Rights Movement.
McGuire brilliantly opens the book with the story of Recy Taylor, effectively grabbing the attention of the reader and setting the tone for the remainder of the work. By beginning the narrative with such a horrific event, McGuire drives home the reality of life for African American women during the Jim Crow era. As scaring and horrific as sexual assault truly is, during this time period it was effectively weaponized. It became a weapon of the white male patriarchy to use in its war against the black population. This was a way to maintain white superiority and break the spirit of African American women. It was a weapon of fear, which was terrible, yet effective.
In At the Dark End of the Street, McGuire discusses how African American women physically defended themselves against their attackers. Those who killed their attackers were often charged with murder even though they were acting in self-defense. It was important for the NAACP and other organizations to play an active role in the advocacy of these victims. One such advocate/investigator was Rosa Parks, a woman who is generally only thought of as an elderly woman who refused to give up her seat on the bus. As McGuire shows, she was much more than that.
At the Dark End of the Street is an excellent work that examines a tremendously understudied aspect of the Civil Rights Movement. McGuire has crafted a compelling narrative that engrosses the reader and shines light upon a truly dark time. This book is an invaluable addition to the existing historiography and forces the reader to rethink what they know about the Civil Rights Movement.

This REALLY needs to be made into a movie.

Seriously. Out of all of the history books that i read in high school and in the libraries, this was the only one that actually CLICKED for me. The rampant rape of black women throughout slavery and the Jim Crow Era has always been ignored or quickly dismissed in historical books before but this great author made sure to NOT do that! I love her for that! This book needs to be made into a movie one day! This will be the first time where our stories will be told thoroughly.

I watched The Help, and it failed to mention the sexual assaults and rapes that the black women suffered. Although i enjoyed the movie somewhat, i was still disappointed because they refused to let our REAL stories get told. You can't have a good story set in the Jim Crow era without telling the rampant rapes of black women by white men and other men. It's part of our history. Whether many people want to admit it or not!

This Book Will Change Your Life or at Least Your Perspective

This was an excellent book. I read it for a Women's Studies course and am so glad I did. It is a hard read at times due to the subject matter and I got chills over and over with every page I turned. This is a dense read so full of information, facts, and, the best part in my opinion, stories that hit you straight in your emotions (I am not ashamed to admit I got a little teary eyed at times). The Civil Rights Movement in the US is definitely taken for granted and has been whittled down to little bites of history where MLK Jr. is glorified and positioned as the center piece but if you read this book you'll learn there was so so much more to it and that once again history bears its burden on the backs of so many brave black women.

A wonderful book

This ancient text, from a follower in the Sufi school of Ibn-Arabi, is a wonderfully done combination of translation and text. The history of this master, with the major concepts he is working in, was fascinating, though it takes study. This sets the stage for the flashes themselves, which are further explained, adding depth, in a later commentary section. The poetry may not appeal to those who want the accessibility and lyric beauty of Rumi; but they are quite beautiful and moving. I find reading The Divine Flashes an excellent way to enter meditation.

Fakhruddin `Iraqi (1213-1289) was already in his time a famous Sufi poet-gnostic, who was particularly gifted in expressing the mysteries of Union in the language of love. He lived during the thirteenth century at the peak of the revival of Islamic spirituality, and was contemporary with such figures as Ibn `Arabi, Jalaluddin Rumi and Shams Tabrizi, Sadruddin Qunawi, Najmuddin Kubra, and Kermani.

`Iraqi may be considered as one of the "fideli d'Amore" of Persian Sufism, gnostics who considered love as the foundation of transcendent awareness, such as Mansur al-Hallaj, Ahmad Ghazzali, `Ayn al-Qodhat Hamdhani, Ruzbihan Baqli, and Shihabuddin Suhrawardi.

"Divine Flashes" is his prose masterpiece, in which he re-wrote, in the language of love, the "Fusus al-Hikam" (lit. "The Seals of the Wisdoms") of Ibn al-`Arabi. Each "Flash" of `Iraqi corresponds with a "Seal of Wisdom" of Ibn al-`Arabi. After his death, `Iraqi was buried, at his request, beside the tomb of Ibn al-`Arabi in Damascus.

Through the "Lama'at" (Divine Flashes), the theoshophy of Ibn al-`Arabi was recreated and integrated into the Persion poetic tradition, and its influence on later poets cannot be overestimated.
Moreover, according to Sadruddin Qunawi, spiritual heir and stepson of Ibn al-`Arabi, " `Iraqi, you have published the secret of men's words. The "Lama'at" is in truth the pith of the "Fusus"!"

I like this text very much, although I had to struggle with this book. I think that the layout could be a little better. I have solved this by doing the following: type out the main text in my computer (while leaving out less important sentences); cut the sentences into a general poetry format. Only then could I more easily go through the text.

"I gaze at the glass which reveals my beauty
and see the universe but an image of that image.
In the paradise of theophany I am the Sun: marvel not
that every atom becomes a vehicle of my manifestation.

"What are the Holy Spirits? - The delegates of my secret;
and the shapes of men? - The vessels of my bodily form.
World-encircling Ocean? - A drop of my overflowing effusion;
purest Light? - But a spark of my illumination."

This book is a must-read, must-own for anyone seriously interested in its subject. I keep returning to it, and should have rated it 5 stars.

a love theory divine

Iraqi chilled with the best of 'em.
a dervish that wandered into the same konya that was home to Rumi. a student of Rumi's friend Sadruddin Qunyawi(disciple to Ibn Arabi). Iraqi's Flashes are the synthesis of Ibn Arabi's metaphysics and the love theory from Ahmed Ghazali's Sawanih(the oldest persian work on sacred love by Abu Hamid Ghazali's younger and more mystical bro). while Chittick's great prose translations may never compare to the beauty of the persian originals, the powerful ideas expressed in the poetry trigger enlightening thoughts and awaken the soul.
so...while Muslim philosophers say technical things like:"GOD IS THE NECESARRY EXISTANT" or "ALL EXISTANCE IS a Manifestation of DIVINE ATTRIBUTES". the poet Iraqi says NOTHING EXISTS BUT LOVE.
You are a LOVER, you just don't know it YET.
The book is smack in the face of all who say Islam is a religion of Hate that believes God as a distant vengeful one to obey out of fear.

About the Author
Wayne L. Winston is Professor Emeritus of Decision Sciences at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and is now a Professor of Decision and Information Sciences at the Bauer College at the University of Houston. He has won more than 45 teaching awards, including the school-wide MBA award six times. His current interest is in showing how spreadsheet models can be used to solve business problems in all disciplines, particularly in finance, sports, and marketing. In addition to publishing more than 20 articles in leading journals, Dr. Winston has written such successful textbooks as OPERATIONS RESEARCH: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING: APPLICATIONS AND ALGORITHMS, SIMULATION MODELING WITH @RISK, DATA ANALYSIS FOR MANAGERS, SPREADSHEET MODELING AND APPLICATIONS, MATHLETICS, DATA ANALYSIS AND BUSINESS MODELING WITH EXCEL 2013, MARKETING ANALYTICS, and FINANCIAL MODELS USING SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION. Very good for beginners in OR

I have completed my Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Statistics without a little knowledge about Optimization. Fortunately, I came across this book. This book has played a big role by creating for me a career in Operations Research. It contains many industrial problems to demonstrate the usefulness of the subject. It replaces the instructor by its good explanatory texts. With this book, you are guaranteed to have a break through in the area of Operations research.

From Deterministic to Stochastic

This is one of the excellent industrial engineering books. From deterministic and simple linear programming to stochastic systems such as queueing models or dynamic programming, you may read and "learn" lots of things about OR. However, for stochastic cases you will need extra help for its matematics. But if you want to learn something about industrial engineering or something related with it, that is the book you must buy.

I have used this book for five years in my Operation Research classes. Its emphasis is in the mathematical modeling. The explanations are complete and clean. But, the exercises are the best part: a lot of examples and modeling exercises. A very good book for engineering students.

About the Author

Saundra K. Ciccarelli received her Ph.D. from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee in developmental psychology. She is a member of Division 2 of the APA. Ciccarelli has been teaching introductory psychology for over 20 years. Her research interests include language and intelligence development in children and adolescents. She has authored numerous ancillary materials for introductory psychology texts, including the supplements to accompany the 6th through 9th editions of Coon, and the 4th through 6th editions of Feldman.

Same info as the newer edition

This edition is almost identical to the newest edition. I purchased this book for my child attending college. I purchased this book instead of the new edition because the only difference in the chapters is the fact that two of them are in different locations in the book. Other than that, it's the same info! There isn't any reason to purchase the newer edition. If you are looking to save money on books for college, always check out the earlier editions. In most cases, it's the same info rearranged. A little research can save a lot of money.

Get the Facts on Loose-Leaf

Just so you know, bookstores and book buyers only give you a fraction of the original cost of a traditional hardcover or paper bound textbook. If you buy the loose leaf version, you have the advantage of more portability (take only the chapters you need to class), insertion of your own notes within the chapters, and a much cheaper price to begin. Yes, you cannot sell it back to the college bookstore and book buyers won't take it. But the price you pay for the loose leaf up front is pretty much the exact same amount of money you would have been "out" had you bought the much more expensive version and then sold it back. So, the question you really have to ask is do you want to "rent" a hardcover or softcover that you will sell, or do you want to pay the same price and be able to keep the text?

Now, having said all that, as the author of this text, I encourage you to go out and buy the hardcover because I get more money that way! Hee, hee. Buy several, give them to your friends. Makes great Christmas/Chanukah presents.

Great Textbook

I used this textbook for my general psych class. I liked this textbook and thought it was very easy to navigate. It flows nicely and has good visuals. I hope my school continues to use this author's work, as it is very well-organized and made it easy to study for tests.

Overall, I liked this textbook and think others would, too. From what I gather, they have come out with a new edition. I'm not sure how different the two are, but if this edition is any indication of what we can expect from the author, the new edition should be just as good.

Filled in the gaps

My grandson had to do Bud, Not Buddy as a summer reading assignment. We included some of his friends and met once a week. The guide helped them understand the time period which was foreign to them. We did some games with the vocabulary words so I knew they got what the characters were saying. On the first day of school they have to turn in an activity and respond to a writing prompt. Because of the study guide I know they'll be prepared.

About the Author

Bernhard Hennen was born in Krefeld, Germany. He studied archaeology, history, and German studies at Cologne University, and he traveled extensively while working as a journalist. With Wolfgang Hohlbein, Hennen published his first novel, Das Jahr des Greifen, in 1994. Since then, his name has appeared on dozens of historical and fantasy novels as well as numerous short stories. Hennen has also developed the storyline for a computer game, and he has worked as a swordsman for hire in medieval shows and as a Santa Claus mercenary. In 2000, the author returned to the city of his birth and lives there with his wife and children.

James A. Sullivan was born in 1974 in West Point, New York, and grew up in Germany. During his studies in Cologne, he, together with Bernhard Hennen, became involved in the adventure of writing The Elven. He continues this work, following Nuramon in a novel focused on the tragic fate of one of the most popular figures of German fantasy.

Fantastic! Enthralling! Easily one of the best fantasy novels I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

I've been wracking my brain for the past day or so, struggling to find the best way to articulate my thoughts on "The Elven." I've found little success: "The Elven" somehow manages to tell a story both both familiar and refreshing. It can often be difficult to fully express the quality of a novel--the adjectives that come most easily seldom confer nearly so much meaning as they ought to.

I first discovered "The Elven" entirely by happenstance. I was aching for a good book to read, and the discounted price on Amazon--along with the discounted price of the eBook--convinced me to give Hennen's story a shot, even though it had only one user review on Amazon.com. Cursory research revealed the Bernhard Hennen is a fairly prolific Fantasy author in German, whose works have been translated into many different languages. This unfortunately-titled novel, "The Elven," is (more unfortunately) the first of his stories to be translated in English. Hennen has approximately 17 books available on Kindle on Amazon.de, all of which are rated very highly--the majority scoring a 4.5/5 review average (including "The Elven," which has reviews from more than 400 users). The reviews for the "Elven" series were particularly glowing. I took the liberty of translating a bit from the two most helpful German reviews:

The most helpful positive review, by "Martin H." (5/5) declares the book to be harmonious, fascinating, thrilling, sad and vivid. The first three novels form a trilogy of sorts, but each stands alone as a complete story. He states, "The world and characters are vividly and lovingly described so that the reader is immediately immersed into the world of the Elfs. Everything is written with a great deal of detail that never feels too wordy or fails to hold the readers attention." He also states that the story manages at times to be dramatic or melancholy without ever feeling contrived or cheesy.

Conversely, the most helpful critical review, by "Media-Mania" (3/5) declares the book to be a very good read, but "brutally" short. This first novel is a complex book that tells a "marvelously intense story," with a great deal of suspense, action, mystery and magic, as well as a great deal of humor. He/she/they declare it to be "A true adventure story and a master work." The review has nothing but praise for the novel itself, but instead criticizes the (German) audiobook adaptation, which apparently lost much of the content from the novel.

So: now that I've read the book myself, what do I think?

It's fantastic. Possibly even a little sublime. The Elven is very much written directly in the mold of the old Norse sagas. At first glance, that may seem to be a mark against the novel. After all, is there any setting more cliched in fantasy than the Norse-inspired mythic realm? Elves, Dwarves, Trolls and lots of hearty men with stout Scandinavian names, epic beards, and double-headed axes?

But where most Fantasy authors conjure their settings through the lens of Tolkien (whose own work was a lens through which to view the old Sagas), Hennen ignores Tolkien and emulates the source itself. So, despite the many similiarities to Tolkien's masterpiece, "The Elven" feels more like a parallel work than a derivative one.

I guess my "review" is getting pretty long, huh? I'm sorry about that. I really want to "sell" this book to everyone out there, but at the same time I don't want to rob any enjoyment of the story by spoiling anything, no matter how minor. The story of "The Elven" has humor, but treats its plot and characters seriously--with respect. The central conceit of the novel is lifted directly from some of my favorite myths and fairytales. To get from one point or another, the characters travel by means of magical portals--portals which are not altogether reliable, and have a bad habit of dumping our heroes out at their destination far later than they'd expect. This allows the story to be focused and personal, while still managing to fill out a truly epic, historical scale spanning centuries.

And, covering entire generations as it does, the novel is able to constantly provide each scene--each moment--with genuine tension. Because people do die, and the world does change, and if there's one clear and obvious theme to Hennen's story, it's that everyone is at Time's mercy. In other words, it's impossible to be certain in the safety or success of any one character, because their trials and triumphs are presented at a historic scale. This transforms the "draw" of the story from seeing what the characters do to, instead, seeing why and how they do the things they do.

What makes the story of "The Elven" truly memorable is the pacing. The "time travel" conceit allows the tale to be neatly divided into small chunks--each like a self-contained story that is connected to both the preceding and succeeding tales, but also enthralling in its own right. Rather than a single novel, "The Elven" feels like a collection of heroic stories tied together more by the characters involved than the machinations of the overreaching plot. None of the scenes feel wasted, and nothing at all feels superfluous (which, I now realize, is praise I can confer upon preceious few books, fiction or otherwise). The prose itself is--and I cannot stress this enough--magnificent.

I wish I could discuss the quality of the translation, and maybe someday in the future I will. What I can say, having learned German myself solely to read Herman Hesse's stories in their original tongue, is that translating German to English is a very difficult task. And while I cannot yet comment on the accuracy of Edwin Miles' translation, I CAN comment on its overall quality. The prose... is simply fantastic. The writing conveys action, humor and beauty quite deftly. So deftly that, if I did not know better, I would never have suspected this to be a translation at all. Miles clearly put sufficent effort into his translation to make it appear effortless. If more of Hennen's books are to be translated into English (and I very much hope they are), I hope they are translated even half so well.

The great story-THE SLOPPY END.......

I would have preferred to have given this a 5 star, but I was so let down by the ending, I just could not do it. The whole book had me mesmerized, so involved. This book was truly a piece of literary art, I couldn't put it down to do anything so mundane such as cleaning or making meals!!! And after all the work that was so obviously, so heartfelt put into it, it finished like a rush job to get rid if it and be done....I wanted to yell to Mr. Hennen=HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME???!!!!

A Great Saga

I really enjoyed the epic sweep of this story, spanning generations and centuries. The saga draws from primarily Germanic mythology, and fits well within that body of literature. I'm reminded of Tolkien's statement "[I] set myself a task, the arrogance of which I fully recognized and trembled at: being precisely to restore to the English an epic tradition and present them with a mythology of their own." Few modern stories I've read can comfortably claim to stand in that tradition, but I felt The Elven" was among those few.

The story starts with Mandred, the chieftain or jarl of a northern village, and his effort to save his home and family from the ravages of a Man-Boar which has arrived nearby. That leads to to his encounter with the eleven people and a centuries long companionship with two elves in particular - Nuramon and Farodin.

There are a variety of heroic themes in the story as well:

* Choices, sacrifices, and responsibilities of leadership
* Conflict between role of father as protector and as nurturer
* Loyalty between friends and comrades
* Spite, forgiveness, and common-cause

What the story avoided, to its credit I think, was a quest for the single magical trinket that would save the day. Although the characters were not developed in the same way that they might be in a modern soul-searching novel, this is primarily a story about people and the challenges of the quest.

The tale was well worth the reading and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys epic tales in the Germanic tradition.

A fine anthology of Plantinga's most important work

I was recently thumbing through an overview book of philosophy, and the writers made passing mention of how theism is a viable intellectual option, simply by virtue of the defense of theism that has been mounted by the great Christian thinkers. The author's three examples were Descartes, Reid, and Plantinga. Alvin Plantinga's philosophical work has spanned half a century and has influenced the whole of the philosophical world, among theistic and non-theistic thinkers alike. Books like God and Other Minds, The Nature of Necessity, and God, Freedom, and Evil have not only stood the test of time, but their influence continues to be felt across a variety of disciplines. In The Analytic Theist (hereafter TAT), editor James Sennett has collected the most forceful and significant of his writings.

One of the benefits of such an anthology is that it shows the development of a philopher's thought over time. Here are the roots of the movement now known as Reformed Epistemology, from Plantinga's argument that belief in God is no more unjustified than belief in other minds to his monumental essay, "Reason and Belief in God," where he begins laying the groundwork for his later work on why theistic belief has legitimate epistemic warrant.

But there is more to Plantinga than epistemology. Sennett includes his "free will defense" on the problem of evil, his modal version of the ontological argument for God's existence, a few chapters on philosophical theology, and even a review of a book of New Testament criticism. In all of these selections Plantinga's trademarks are evident: his sharp wit, his use of humor, his lucid writing style and, most importantly, a weighty clear-headedness that is the mark of any good analytic philosopher. For those unfamiliar with analytic philosophy or the type of meticulous logical argumentation that Plantinga utilizes, there will be some chapters that will seem difficult, if not downright opaque. As is the case in any highly specialized academic field, this is to be expected, but the general reader - and especially the general Christian reader - should not be turned off by Plantinga's rigor. There are other selections in TAT that are much easier going for the casual reader but are as equally important as some of the more technical chapters.

The only potential complaint I have about TAT is that it contains no chapters on Plantinga's work in the area of epistemic warrant, either from Warrant: The Current Debate or Warrant and Proper Function, both of which were published five years prior to TAT. No study of Plantinga is complete if it ignores his notion of warrant, but that is a minor quibble. TAT is essential reading for any Christian who endeavors to be an intellectual of faith. There is something here for not only Christians in academia but for every believer. Most Christian scholars and writers - if they are worth their weight in paper - are already familiar with Plantinga, but it's a shame that many Christian leaders and teachers seem not to have discovered his inestimable value. Pastors, knuckle down and pick up anything by Alvin Plantinga. Begin either with The Analytic Theist or Warranted Christian Belief. It's time to move into the big leagues.

Plantinga is one of the best in analytical philosophy...

I really do not belong to the analytical school of philosophy, being more into what is known as continental philosophy. Still, I have to highly reccomend this book for both theists and atheists alike. For theists, it will help strengthen some of your beliefs, while force you to think about other beliefs you hold. For atheists, it will do something similar, though it will obviously challenge more than it affirms. The greatest strength of this book, however, is that the articles are not all easy, nor are they all so difficult that only a person who's a master of esosteric terminology can grasp it. The essays range from easy (such as Advice to Christian Philosophers, as well as his treatment on the problem of evil) all the way to very challenging (his essay on Ockhams way out is one of the most challenging things I've read to date). In summary, Plantinga is one of the leading Christian thinkers today, and it would benefit everyone to read some of his writings, if for nothing else than to get a different (Christian) point of view.

Excellent Collection of Plantinga's Writing

Published in the late 1990s, The Analytic Theist is a collection of writings by Alvin Plantinga edited by James Sennett. Plantinga is one of the leading contemporary philosophers and arguably the most significant philosopher of religion in recent times.

Overall, this is an excellent selection of Plantinga's work touching on most key areas of his thought. I offer minor comments in two areas for potential buyers. First, although it is a convenient and broad compilation this is not original material - it has all been previously published. For those with other Plantinga works in their collections, I recommend a quick look at the on-line table of contents prior to purchasing. Second, the text was published a decade ago. Plantinga remains active and has written extensively during the intervening period - including perhaps his magnum opus Warranted Christian Belief.

I highly recommend this text to all students of philosophy and religion. It is an outstanding and accessible collection from a truly noteworthy thinker
