Go Sees: Girls Knocking on My Door, by Juergen Teller

The studio of photographer Juergen Teller, best known for his fashion pictures, is located in a tiny street in West London. And it is the front door of his studio that somehow seems to play the leading role in this book. During one year, from May 1998 to May 1999, Teller was visited by hundreds of girls, sent to him by agencies for a casting shoot. At the beginning of this book there was a simple idea that struck Teller: why not photograph all his young female visitors and turn the result into a convincing conceptual piece of art photography? The result is striking, sometimes funny, and makes us question the fashion industry and its world of models. We encounter girls, mostly around the age of 16 or 17, presenting themselves to the photographer in the hope of a great career. Sometimes they come alone, sometimes in groups, sometimes accompanied by their parents. Captured in different lights of the changing seasons, but always at the entrance of Teller's studio, the portraits seem to melt into one single portrait - that of the one and only model, whatever she might look like.

Amazingly elusively beautiful models
By Mediahound
I've never seen a book with photographs of so many beautiful women all in one package. Looking through this book, one get's a feeling of the elusiveness of beauty. All (well most) of the women/girls depicted are very pretty, but you find yourself asking if there is any point to this book other than to show off this anonymous beauty.
While I periodically keep coming back to this book, I long for more. Maybe that's the point of the book. If it is, the book succeeds in piquing my interest.

Snaps, but more
By Derby Chang
I bought this on a whim, but it surprised me how much this book fascinates me. Without make-up and stylists, these photographs could be just family snaps (and indeed, hilariously, some are). But they show a side of the industry that is hardly ever documented. Some girls are nervous, some outrageous exhibitionists, some can't turn off the uber-model look if they tried. Beautiful.

A simple concept results in a fascinating photo journal
By J. Lizzi
The term "go-see" refers to a certain photo encounter whereby an aspiring model hooks up with a photographer, with the understanding that neither one has a specified commission for the session's work. The model, also called a "go-see," is hoping for the one gig to launch a career; the photographer is hoping to discover the next new "face."
In a simplistic but strikingly revealing book, Juergen Teller has chronicled just under a year's worth of "go-sees" with over 460 photos taken in and around the entrance to his London apartment. Each page has one picture (most often color), the date, and the name of the model. The book is quite heavy (literally) for its size, and is put together with a high-quality cover, binding and paper.
It's easy to get used to perusing books by the top fashion photographers showing the most beautiful women, creative sets, perfect lighting, makeup, etc. This book is MUCH different. I'm turning the pages one by one, looking at face after face: so many walks of life . . . so much expectation . . . so much hope. Who succeeded? Who failed? Even some famous models are in there. Can you find them?
With no set, no makeup, and no special lighting, I can't envision Mr. Teller working very hard to get these shots. It doesn't matter. The variation obtained through the diversity of position, angle, expression, and even the weather, is fantastic. Some of the girls posed, and some hammed it up a little; others just stood there and gazed into the camera. And, what a metaphor the doorway is! This book is a wonderful alternative (and complement) to the high end of modeling and fashion photography publications.

Great sequel to the series!
By Julia N Bacellar
I found it to be better than the first one. The paranormal side of the plot had more of an influence on the development of the story, and to me it gave it a feel of adventure, to complement the romance (that i already expected would be there). I'm very anxious to see what will happen in the next book!! It will be interesting to see if Joey will be older, since the time gap between the first and the second was a few years.

Black Box Thinking: Why Most People Never Learn from Their Mistakes--But Some Do, by Matthew Syed

Nobody wants to fail. But in highly complex organizations, success can happen only when we confront our mistakes, learn from our own version of a black box, and create a climate where it’s safe to fail.

We all have to endure failure from time to time, whether it’s underperforming at a job interview, flunking an exam, or losing a pickup basketball game. But for people working in safety-critical industries, getting it wrong can have deadly consequences. Consider the shocking fact that preventable medical error is the third-biggest killer in the United States, causing more than 400,000 deaths every year. More people die from mistakes made by doctors and hospitals than from traffic accidents. And most of those mistakes are never made public, because of malpractice settlements with nondisclosure clauses.

For a dramatically different approach to failure, look at aviation. Every passenger aircraft in the world is equipped with an almost indestructible black box. Whenever there’s any sort of mishap, major or minor, the box is opened, the data is analyzed, and experts figure out exactly what went wrong. Then the facts are published and procedures are changed, so that the same mistakes won’t happen again. By applying this method in recent decades, the industry has created an astonishingly good safety record.

Few of us put lives at risk in our daily work as surgeons and pilots do, but we all have a strong interest in avoiding predictable and preventable errors. So why don’t we all embrace the aviation approach to failure rather than the health-care approach? As Matthew Syed shows in this eye-opening book, the answer is rooted in human psychology and organizational culture.

Syed argues that the most important determinant of success in any field is an acknowledgment of failure and a willingness to engage with it. Yet most of us are stuck in a relationship with failure that impedes progress, halts innovation, and damages our careers and personal lives. We rarely acknowledge or learn from failure—even though we often claim the opposite. We think we have 20/20 hindsight, but our vision is usually fuzzy.

Syed draws on a wide range of sources—from anthropology and psychology to history and complexity theory—to explore the subtle but predictable patterns of human error and our defensive responses to error. He also shares fascinating stories of individuals and organizations that have successfully embraced a black box approach to improvement, such as David Beckham, the Mercedes F1 team, and Dropbox.

GREAT BOOK. HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING!
By Gadget Junkie
A colleague of mine sent me a link to a BBC article regarding this book several weeks ago. As an patented inventor and product designer I was very intrigued by the title. This is the first book I have read by this author. As I read through its pages, I found Matthew Syed's writing style to be captivating enough to keep my attention while describing events and facts which could otherwise be very dry. For that reason, I am compelled to read his other works, but merely based on the content, I have already recommended this book to dozens of people. The concept of learning from mistakes is as old as recorded history. However, if you think that is what this book is about, think again. There are many nuances to the subject matter disclosed which can be very thought provoking and enlightening. On several occasions I actually put the book down, feeling compelled to rethink dozens of situations in my own life where I have made mistakes, not learned from them and ended up repeating them, stuck in closed loop logic.
My key takeaway from reading this book is that Mr. Syed identifies a well-known flaw in humanity to which some critics at first blush might yawn and say “so what, nothing new here” Failure analysis has been around for centuries. Not exactly… this book covers a lot of ground. The Black Box failure analysis model has only been in use for a very limited amount of time in human history, yielding incredible results in aviation safety used for the benefit of all humanity. Yes, individuals throughout history have used versions of failure analysis to solve issues, either for themselves or for small scale issues. But this recent model transcends others in that it truly eliminates the need or benefit of lying, omitting information or tampering with evidence. By doing so, you only perpetuate a problem which could eventually end up costing you your life or the life of your loved ones. I spoke my friend who is a pilot and Lt. Col in the US Air Force about claims in this book and he confirmed the legitimacy and efficacy of the program, stating that US Military standards are slightly different than commercial aviation, but no doubt that you are immune to prosecution and encouraged to fully disclose information, which is solely used to improve safety for not only for the military, but for the greater good of all mankind. In my mind, that is what makes it unique.
If you were to tell a pilot in 1935 that in 2015, more pilgrims would die traveling on foot to Mecca (or being politically correct, Hajj 2015), then 3 billion passengers on commercial airplanes, travelling at 575 mph, taking off and landing in everything from thunderstorms and dense fog to snow, ice and gale force winds, sometimes even banking between skyscrapers on approach, they would have looked at you as though you were insane and told you to seek immediate psychological help. But those are the facts, made possible by human beings working together using this system and for the greater good of all.

Thinking about Black Box Thinking and the path to success
By marcos_grande
Having listened to this book twice through, then read the reviews posted thus far, it’s difficult to imagine adding to what has already be written by way of summary. So rather than a review, this is more a reflection of personal experience which I hope proves insightful.

My goal in downloading this book was the hope of drilling down into the concept of “failing better;” an idea borne of Samuel Beckett’s oft cited quotation. And though my initial intention was not to validate my own opinion about the efficacy of introducing my students (I’m an educator) to the idea of iterative progress, I wanted to know whether “success through failure” was more than an empty promise. I was not disappointed.

Matthew Syed is a compelling storyteller. His keen eye for our cultural biases toward kneejerk blaming and scapegoating, overvaluing perfection and underestimating the transformative power of “learning from your mistakes” illustrates how reasoned evaluation can been hijacked by expediency and need for tidy (but misguided) explanations when things go badly wrong.

In my view, the most valuable takeaways from Black Box Thinking include, but are likely not limited to, the following:

• Understanding the complexity of a situation requires decelerating the evaluation process if for no other reason than for the sake of making time to take a broader view.

• Ignoring variables doesn’t make them go away, but does make for an incomplete formula that begs for inaccurate conclusions.

• Intuition-based assumptions are generally self-serving and, for the most part, accurate by pure chance alone.

• Data is a four letter word that needs to be part of decision-making. That it may appear as inconvenient truths or mitigating circumstances doesn’t invalidate it.

There are no doubt additional important insights that I’ve not listed, not the least of which is the book’s underlying premise that success is an iterative process which must include failure, and even repeatedly so. The bottom line is that Black Box Thinking is well worth the read -- all 300 pages of it -- and particularly worth the listen as an audiobook (well-narrated). The thought-provoking storytelling alone is worth the price of admission. More than food for thought, the well-substantiated assertions and suggestions are inspiring signposts along the path forward.

A compelling well written book
By Reg Nordman
A very insightful book. Ever wonder why airflight really learns from mistakes, while healthcare continues to make deathly mistakes every year ( despite tremendous leaps forward in medicine). You will be inspired and then dismayed by Syed's book. If you are any way involved in innovation, total quality, best practices and group productivity, this is a book you need to read. Funding/controlling bodies for institutions such as healthcare, governance, the legal system need to also read this book and act on it. A compelling well written book. Good for a four hour plane ride ,there and back

Taylor rose to editor in chief of Essence magazine more than a decade ago, she began writing an editorial column in which she shares her thoughtsand feelings about how developing one's inner awareness ensures the wisdom and clarity needed to create a deeply satisfying and fulfilling life.

The monthly column called "In the Spirit" is one of the most popular in the magazine.

Susan L. Taylor connects with the reader in a personal and meaningful way, in a voice that is sisterly, informed, and motivating. She challenges her readers to transcend their fears, to face inevitable challenges in their lives courageously, and to use change as an opportunity to grow. "We limit ourselves because change may well mean dealing with the disapproval of the very people we rely on for support. Often words of inspiration and motivation, but she also suggests specific methods for working through problems and improving our emotional and spiritual health.

"We are not powerless spectators of life. We are co-creators with God, and all around is are the gifts, the clay, that we can use to shape our world," she says.

Susan L. Taylor writes passionately about what she has seen and learned in the course of her travels throughout the United States, Caribbean, and Africa. Her essays have helped many to balance the demanding world of work and business with the personal world of family and friendship. She shares bits of her own life--her loves, her trails, and triumphs--and the lessons she's learned.

Many of Susan L. Taylor's readers already collect her editorials and find in them a source of encouragement, self-affirmation, empowerment, and peace of mind. Now they can have new essays and a few previously published favorites elegantly bound in a gift-sized paperback edition to keep for themselves or to give as a gift of love to those who are special to them.

From Publishers Weekly
Taylor, the editor-in-chief of Essence , mixes personal anecdotes, black pride and an upbeat spirituality in these brief essays, many of them reprinted from her magazine. Though the wisdom she dispenses is hardly original, her direct style and warmth should reach her target audience of African American women. "We'll never feel content if our happiness depends on someone else's behavior," Taylor writes, noting that she has learned to measure success not by wealth but through "happiness, personal satisfaction and being of service to others." Her most powerful essays are the most self-revealing: in one clearly painful recollection, she concludes that her father's furious reaction to her surreptitious meeting with a young man humiliated her but may ultimately have saved her. "What I felt was a shameful experience that put a damper on my sexuality actually prevented me from becoming pregnant as a teenager." Although Taylor regularly invokes a Christian God, that God is nondenominational and her exhortations are not to doctrine but to a more personal faith. First serial to Essence; author tour.

From Library Journal
The editor-in-chief of Essence , Taylor writes deeply personal yet relevant essays that affirm the necessity of faith, love, belief, endurance, intuition, acceptance of life in the face of death, health, and intimacy. Taylor writes first of all for black women, sharing her experience of poverty after divorce and of finding faith not only in God but also in herself. Yet ultimately what Taylor writes appeals to common humanity while encouraging transcendence--perhaps most powerfully set forth by her friend Marie, suffering from cancer, who suddenly, helplessly watched her house burn with all of her children inside but who later found the courage to become an advocate for children. Highly recommended.

From Booklist
Taylor's book is in step with the many self-help and guided meditation books currently on the market. She urges her readers to think positively and to have faith that the good will come to them. She is also a realist and states clearly that this may not make life easier to live, but that it will change the way one thinks about that life for the better. Drawing from her own experiences and a rich tradition of spiritual teaching, Taylor talks to her readers as a sister might. She relates stories and lessons with gentleness and humor, and she empowers and encourages those who read her essays to look inside themselves for strength. While some of the essays have been reprinted from her column in Essence magazine, many are new. Her fans will find a familiar friend, and others will discover a spiritual companion to enjoy on their journey. Mary Deeley

The Second Law (Scientific American Library), by P. W. Atkins

The novelist and physicist C. P. Snow once remarked that not knowing the Second Law of thermodynamics was analogous to never having read a work of Shakespeare's. This profusproductely illustrated volume breaks down the mathematical barriers that have prevented many from understanding this fundamental principle of energy transformation and describes the origin, atomic basis, and wide-ranging applications of this central, unifying description of all natural change.

Simply stated, the Second Law recognizes the intrinsic asymmetry in nature. Aspects of this asymmetry can be found all around us: hot objects cool, but cool objects do not spontaneously become hot; a bouncing ball comes to rest, but a stationary ball does not spontaneously begin to bounce. Oxford professor P. W. Atkins begins his examination of these seemingly random but vitally important phenomena with early observations of the steam engine and traces the deepening understanding that emerged when the atomic basis of the Law was established. He analyzes the Law from a modern viewpoint, enabling us to see how a single, simple idea encompasses all elements of natural change.

Atkins explores this idea from its first recognition through its application in engines, refrigerators, and heat pumps to its role as the driving force of chemical reactions and, finally, to the emergence of the exquisitely ordered structures characteristic of life itself.

Using striking computer graphics to develop a unified picture of nature, the author shows us how structures are built apparently out of chaos until we grasp the underlying, awesome simplicity of complexity. An appendix details how to program the generation of printouts of the concepts discussed.

A book to broaden the mind
By A Customer
Quite a few students of chemistry and physics share a certain anxiety when it comes to thermodynamics. The word brings to mind an endless maze of partial differential equations and vague, hard-to-grasp concepts like path integrals and entropy. Entropy is a fundamental concept in nature, arguably even THE most fundamental. Regular courses in thermodynamics do not sufficiently highlight this fact. Worse, quite a few of those courses actually turn students away from the beautiful properties of entropy. Atkins' book can change all that. First of all, it is utterly comprehensible for any and all interested readers. After careful study, the reader will know more of entropy that the average college student fresh out of a thermodynamics course. Added to that, the reader will appreciate the crucial role of entropy in nature. If you're in college and are likely to run into thermodynamics, get this book and read it prior to your course. If you're out of college and still think that thermodynamics is a dirty word, this book will set you straight. It might even ensnare you to the beautiful world of entropy.

At last! The Big Picture!
By Daniel Lalonde
When in hign school, I learned from the chemistry teacher how entropy was a fundamental quantity; a measure of a system's disorder, an index of whether or not a reaction is going to be possible or not. Then, in Engineering school, I learned to compute the entropy of a system, to calculate its efficiency and to decide whether or not a process violated some fundamental law (the first, the second...).
But exactly what is entropy? How can it be understood in term of intuitive concepts? What is the relation between the enginner's entropy and the microscopic one (the disorder index)? Why is it so fundamental, yet so arcane that no one ever dared explain it except to teach us how to compute it?
P.W. Atkins answers these questions beautifully. First, he makes an historical account of how we became aware of the concept and defines it from a contemporary perpective. He very accurately and clearly dissect the fundamentals of the laws of thermodynamics. He then gives us numerous examples of how entropy is relevant to the understanding of nature's process, be it in physics, mechanics, chemistry or biology, etc. Eventually, one acquires an intuitive understanding of why these two laws are so fundamentals: why these are so important and prevalent? Why their existence is so unavoidable?
In order to undertand this book,no special mathematical knowledge is required. The logic is rigorous yet affordable and the text is very well structured. You may find the task easier if you have at least a college degree in science but all that is really required is the discipline to pay attention.
At the end of the book, you will appreciate the orderly fashion of the authors toughts. Most of all you will enjoy the very visceral pleasure of seeing one more part of nature's beauty.

A less-than-adequate exposition
By A Customer
This book is an attempt to render the second law of thermodynamics and its basic quantity-- entropy-- in nonmathematical terms comprehensible to a general reader. Atkins does well in expressing these often-difficult concepts in layman's terms; unfortunately, in so doing, his book has also succumbed to the same oversimplifications that have made the law so confusing and contradictory to students in the first place.
The book repeats the old-fashioned equivalence of entropy to disorder, in spite of the fact that while the second law (in the Boltzmann formulation) is suggestive of a trend toward disorder, the latter is a complicated concept that is not fully encapsulated by entropy. The entropy of a circumscribed system can in fact be a motor toward greater order. Atkins does allude to this notion in the later chapters that deal with ordering phenomena that cast off a correspondingly greater amount of entropy outside the system; but the treatment is surprisingly cursory, the book leaving out many crucial examples (e.g. the spontaneous particle-size separation in a Boltzmannian container with only Brownian motion, radiative energy transfer, canonical chaotic systems, aspects of polymeric molecule behaviour and organisation) that have spurred the debate about the meaning and implications of the second law in the first place.
The second law has been formulated in so many different forms and seems to say so many different things that it would have been helpful to have a "sorting out" in a book dedicated to explaining it; but this does not occur here, and all the confusion about information, different forms of order/disorder, the semantic difficulties of heat vs. mechanical energy, that make students' questions so difficult to answer-- the book fails to address these to any sufficiency. There are also the issues of reconciling the entropy concept with general relativity and gravitational fields, one of the most fascinating challenges and, here, given short shrift. The book toward its close indulges in an odd speculative and metaphysical meditation that is overgeneralised, unsupported, and entirely out of place in a work that, for all its flaws, was at least restrained up to this later portion. In teaching the second law one of the most important emphases to be made is the rigorous demand to specify the set of conditions that define the experimental system, and the lack of restraint on the author's part here is therefore quite a disappointment.
Those interested in a nonmathematical exposition of the second law should instead read Valery Chalidze's "Entropy Demystified"; J.S. Dugdale's "Entropy and Its Physical Meaning," while of a more mathematical bent, is worth the effort if you have some background in physics or applied mathematics, probably being the most thorough treatment available.
