Are we Ready for Change?

This book is a collection of 25 articles edited by Paul Sloan.

I like article books since you can pick them up for a few minutes and return to them easily later.

First we need to define Crowdsourcing (even though the book defined open innovation first which is the flow of ideas in and out of the organization as opposed to just within it).

"Crowd Sourcing is the act of taking a job traditionally performed by an employee and outsourcing it to an undefined larger group in the form of an open call"

To make the process work well, the project needs to be well defined. The problem description is key. And the communication process needs to be well oiled.

Much of the challenge in implementing OI is the fear of change and the "old" systems that are in place already. Most companies have a fear of letting trade secrets out the door. Many companies think if they did not invent it inside their company, it is not good.

The obvious advantage of OI is the larger number of views that can focus on the problem. Different perspectives are often great in solving any problem. When someone is too close to the problem, sometimes the fail to see the best, simplest or most obvious solution.

And of course there is an article on Intellectual Property rights. This alone might scare some companies off.

I love crowdsourcing but have some worries that we may end up trying to commodicise (its my new verb - to make into a commodity) innovation. Although this is problem for those trying to innovate, this is not why I worry about it. I worry that we may end up in a world where no one takes the time to truly think in depth about things. I know I already have that problem. I cannot remember the last time I spent full focus time for 3 hours at a time.

Crowdsourcing dramatically increases the value of analysts - the ones who can define the problem.

Does this make "A Guide to Open Innovation and Crowdsourcing" less relevant for me?

Some claim that Open Innovation is just a hype. Stefan Lindegaard recently wrote why the open innovation hype is good thing. As a citizen and a customer service professional I favor anything that can convince authorities management, leadership and employees to improve and innovate. And be sure, editor Paul Sloane and the advice from leading experts like Braden Kelley, Hutch Carpenter and Andrea Meyer do deliver tips, advices and examples in a - for me - convincing way.

As stated before, Jim Collins once wrote very well: "Whether you prevail or fall, endure or die, depends more on what you do to yourself than on what the world does to you". Neglecting open innovation and crowd sourcing as fundamental concepts (and not limited to innovation) or acting: it is up to you.

The guide offers you to explore the field and gives examples, what challenges companies met and how they were overcome. And those who are familiar with change management of personal effectiveness approaches, may find similar approaches in some of the chapters. With the valuable extension of how these concepts can be applied more effective in a networked environment or crowd sourcing approach.

One minor flaw for me is that - being a service professional - I missed the application of crowd sourcing and innovation in the service economy, customer services or professional services.

Great book featuring some of the leading minds in Innovation and Crowdsourcing all in one place.

Although each chapter is written and presented by different experts, the author has done an excellent job in framing all these varied viewpoints into a single collection by adding just enough of his own expertise to make the entire book read cohesively and smoothly.

I especially like the order that the book is divided into with chapters that take the reader starting with the basics of "What is Open Innovation?" and "What is Crowdsourcing?", onto both strategic and tactical topics such as "The Importance of a Strategic Approach to Open Innovation","Bridging Open Innovation Gaps", "Building the Culture for Open Innovation and Crowdsourcing" and many more - all the way to "Envisioning the Future of Innovation."

If you are interested in the topics of Innovation and Crowdsourcing, this book delivers the opportunity to get some of the latest expert insights on both subjects in one single volume. Big Disappointment

This book is very short and the writing is very big. It contains nothing that you can't find on the Internet in a couple of minutes with google. In fact google is much more valuable. I often will buy a forex book to see if I can get something small out of it. There is nothing in this book of value unless you are an absolute novice and then I would still be scared as I feel you would blow your bankroll on the strategies presented. Trading is not that easy. This book was put out in such a hurry you can't even see the diagrams clearly. Stick with authors like Ponsi.What I find interesting is how many 5 star reviews this book has got, but none of these people have ever reviewed another book !

Took a chance!

While the writing style of this book makes it very straight-forward and easy to understand, it's way too short! The author only presents two strategies with 2-3 trading examples for each.

The first trade setup uses Moving Averages (Simple, Weighted, Exponential) while the second gives some insight on using Bollinger Bands.

Excellent book with practical advice

Forex Trading: Uncut is a slim book but packed with excellent advice from getting started to thinking long term. The key contributions in this book are contained in Chapter 3, The Game Plan which contains three specific strategies for trading Forex. Using the first strategy, I was able to achieve several winning trades in my initial attempts with this strategy. Perhaps most importantly following this strategy, I was able to stay out of a trade that I might have otherwise attempted. I was all set to go long on GBP/USD but held off because one of the signals described by the author of this book was not active. GBP/USD went down and I didn't suffer an unnecessary loss. Staying out of a losing trade more than paid for this great little book.

Outstanding translation of Benedetti's poetry

This is an outstanding translation of Benedetti's poetry. I was born and raised in Uruguay and I know the many nuances a given word or phrase can have in our dialect. It is not enough to know perfect Spanish to understand some of these subtleties, you have to know the Uruguayan dialect in great detail, as well as the culture and politics of the country and region. The translator is obviously aware of all these subtleties and has done a terrific job bringing the flavor of Benedetti's poetry into English. After having seen so much incompetent translation of this poet's work over the years, this book is a breath of fresh air. It's obviously a labor of love and it really "gets" Benedetti.

Benedetti touches the heart

I received a copy of the poems in WITNESS a while ago and was overwhelmed by the brilliance of the translations as they place the poems into the best possible English (colloquial or formal as needed)for absorbing them fully. The loving care that has been taken with this Urguayan poet's sensibilities is a good sign that Benedetti will develop a loyal following in the US. Benedetti lived close to the mostly quiet murmurings of the forces of nature and that they still throb with life as they make their way into a new language is a trumph of feeling as much as it is of the perfect word for the Spanish. This is not a word-for-word but a sense-for-sense re-creation of the best of Benedetti. Congratulations to the poet and many and deep thanks to his chosen translator.

As a Uruguayan and an avid reader of Benedetti's poetry, I can say with certainty that this anthology is truly "Benedetti in English." It's incredible how well Popkin's translations and the texts she has chosen capture the essence of one of Latin America's greatest contemporary authors. I absolutely recommend this book.

Guys, if You Can Find a Copy Get It

I picked this up at a clearance table at the local bookstore, and it it fantastic. As is probably true of most wives, mine loves to be pampered. She's athletic, and often needs some muscle attention, but I am also athletic. The real problem is that my sport of choice is karate, and I am often a) exhausted, b) bruised, or c) broken and very rarely in the mood to hunker down to give a lengthy massage.

That's where this book comes in. It is full of simple 5- or 6- step routines that leave my wife feeling relaxed and happy. I'm serious when I say that only 15 minutes of massage is good enough to put my lovely insomniac to sleep.

The vote of a selfishly motivated husband is: two thumbs up!

About the Author
Computer developer turned author, Byron Francis graduated from university in Colorado with a degree in Computer Science & Engineering. As a child of the ‘80’s growing up in the computer age, technology enthusiast he was always destined to follow this career path, although he did consider teaching software development, before being offered a job at a software house in Denver. Working as a developer, he gained extensive knowledge of computer programming languages working for clients across the globe, and progressed to deliver training, to colleagues and to the end users on writing programmes and using the software. To facilitate his training delivery, he began writing manuals on topics such as Linux, Raspberry Pi 3 and SQL, which proved very popular among his colleagues and so he published them to the wider public. He also writes articles for an online magazine, reviewing new apps and software releases. As Head of Development for the company, he started his career with, Byron now spends less time travelling and more time based in Colorado, where he lives with his wife and their two dogs. This ebook has the strange writing style that makes it appear to be a scam book made by lifting text from elsewhere. It has whole sentences that are run together without spaces, section numbering interrupting sentences & is basically an unreadable mess. The first image shows one such example. There are no images or diagrams in the book. There was an update but it doesn’t seem to have made much difference.

Note that there is no change in formatting anywhere in the book for chapter headings or anything else - the book has all the same size text & same font throughout.
This is normally a sign online that the material has been thrown together from "lifted" material.
I deleted my copy of the eBook & redownloaded it after getting a message that an update was available & the update download was the same. The example shown is in the very beginning of the book so any update should have detected it.

The second image shows an example of a "Program Listing" from the book.
This is an utter mess that is impossible to follow. This is how the book gives the program listing:

I originally could not make any sense of the mess but looking at it later I suspect the text with "23 void setup 4{" etc actually has the editor line numbers mixed in it so that it should read:

etc

I think this is the only thing that could make sense of the material shown.
Note that the first voidsetup is even wrong in the original example - it should be a pair of braces ie () but is shown as an O which makes it meaningless.
The line numbers being included in the mess reinforces the opinion that the material has been "lifted" & the format lost.
No one would write code like shown in the book & if you tried to enter it as shown then it would never run.

I have included this sample program listing below which shows how a program is normally formatted on the screen, but line numbers can be shown as you input the program:

The braces on separate lines etc is how every program is written.
The comments shown following the // are normally included in any program to aid understanding but there are none in any of the book "programs."
The sort of messed format seen in the book text is normally only seen online where people have lifted coding & not been able to retain the formatting or have removed comments etc to hide the original coding origins.
If it isn't a scam then the Author really needs to look at other texts to see how to do things.
As I stated before, the coding shown in the book would not run.
Even the free online material at the manufacturers site (as seen above) is properly formatted & clear so the author could not be ignorant of how normal formatting is done.
This coding is impossible to follow & will not run as printed but the author states it is for beginners!!!!

After reading this book, I could say Arduino is better than other platforms and systems because it simplifies the process of working with micro-controllers. I have read couple of Arduino books before this and got useful information but this book opened my eyes and gave me clear instructions, tips and knowledge. I could .not see a better guide than this one that take cares of all the needs of its learners. I appreciate the way author has done the work

About the Author

Professor Bernd Bertsche earned his degree and doctorate in mechanical engineering at the Universitaet Stuttgart. Afterwards, he worked for Mercedes-Benz AG in the passenger car development unit followed by a position as professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Albstadt-Sigmaringen. Later, he was appointed at the Universitaet Stuttgart. Since 2001 Professor Bertsche is the ordinary and head for the Institute of Machine Components at the Universitaet Stuttgart.

A Modern Standard Text

There is no current book in the field other than this one, so the question is only if it is suitable, since there are no alternatives.
It is a good book. Some of the design process stuff is a bit lightweight, but that is only a minor quibble.
If you work in automotive powertrains or teach a course in automotive engineering, you need this book.

Good, but it could have been better.

First, this book focuses on mechanical transmissions (gearboxes) and barely mentions automatic transmission design and construction. It is rather incomplete for its title "Automotive Transmissions". A more appropriate title would have been "Automotive Gearboxes".
The book sells for roughly $100 for the first edition and at over $200 for the second edition. Unless you are a technical expert working in the field of automotive powertrain, it is not worth the money. The book is highly technical and for the casual reader - even being a mechanical engineer - too theoretical. I would recommend it to engineers involved in train gear design, university professors that teach courses on automotive powertrains, or transmission/powertrain automotive engineers.
