Not what i expected. This publication went into so much detail on the phylosophy of safety that it became boaring to read. Sent book back for a refund. I was looking for a guide to construction safety that would educate me in identifying and correcting safety issues, as well as info for safety discussions. Sent book back and all went well in that transaction with this shipper. My mistake.

Too expensive

I had to buy this book for an OSHA class that I took, and it's simply too expensive. The OSHA book bought at the bureau of Labor actually covers more on the topic then this book.

Hear the Odyssey

Your English teacher was wrong: Homer did not write the Odyssey. He sang it. Actually, scholars are still debating whether the blind mythic poet called Homer ever existed at all, but they do generally agree on two things: the Odyssey is one of the greatest stories surviving from Graecian antiquity, and it was originally meant to be sung, not read. Ancient bards, called rhapsodists, wandered through the hoods of ancient Greece, chanting their stories to all who would listen. Hundreds of generations later, we're still listening. Just two months ago, I listened to Odds Bodkin's rendition of the 2500-year epic on my car CD-player.
Homer's Odyssey depicts the 10-year wanderings of Odysseus, as he tries to go home after he and the Greeks successfully sacked the city of Troy. Bodkin's version pares down these 10-year wanderings to a 4-hour audio presentation, but many of the signature adventures are retained (Included are: the Lotus-Eaters; Polyphemus; the Lystrigonians; Circe; Scylla & Charybdis; Calypso; Princess Nausicaa; plenty of storms and waves, crashes and crushes, and a lot more).
What I don't like about this recording is that Bodkin has about three different voices that he uses for scores of characters; after a while, things start sounding familiar... Also, his attempts at female voices are a misfire; they all sound like Ms. Piggy with a sore throat.
What elevates this recording beyond puppet-show drama, I think, are three things: Bodkin's enthusiasm, the musical track, and his sense of story. The soundtrack, a combination of 12-string guitar and harp, is soothing, mystical, rejuvenating, otherworldly; it could be sold separately. And, while most of the drama is shallow, I still have to admit there are moments when I was truly moved by this story.
Know this -- Bodkin's version of the Odyssey is an adaptation, meaning he may skim here and embellish there, but he has full poetic license to do so, because he is adapting the work for children (and adults who love a good story), and for listening. As for the critics who bash this because it's not "true to the original," they, I would say, are missing the point.
Some people just like to hear a good yarn. If you're in the mood for a funny and talented storyteller to make an ancient story sing again, check this out.

The Odyssey Suite

This is a retelling of Homer�s great story by an actor/storyteller, and lasts just over four hours. By way of contrast, Ian McKellen�s reading of Fagles�s translation of The Odyssey clocks in at 13 hours, 10 minutes. One would think, then, that this version must leave lots out. Well, yes and no. It covers all the main adventures Odysseus has, nor does it hurry over them. (In fact, the Trojan horse sequence, which is just alluded to briefly by Homer, starts the story here and is given an expansive treatment, much of which actually comes from later writers.)
So, Odds Bodkin tells Odysseus�s story in full in four hours. Then what does he leave out? He leaves out Homer�s expansive way of telling a story by means of repeated heroic epithets and extended dialogs. He leaves out the gods, mostly: their part of the story is brief indeed. All the careful planning that went into the defeat of the suitors is left out as well. It leaves out the adventures of Telemachus. All Odysseus�s entertaining fabrications during his travels, these have been excised. And, as this version is intended for children, it leaves out the gruesome scenes at the end where the unfaithful servants are killed.
You might say that it leaves out most of the matter that locates the story in a certain heroic pre-classical culture. Yet some flavor of that culture remains, and the well-known incidents in the story are certainly given their due. Thus we have, in addition to the Trojan Horse, Scylla and Charibdis, the visit to the Underworld, the cattle of Helios, the Sirens, the Isle of the Lotus Eaters, the Cyclops, the misadventures on Circe�s isle, and the long languishing on Calypso�s isle. And it finishes up with a bang as Odysseus strings his mighty bow and lets fly an arrow through all the aligned ax-heads, then, revealed, turns in wrath upon the suitors who have been besieging his wife.
This is certainly an entertaining version, and an excellent way to learn the story � for child or grownup. Odds Bodkin is good at voices, so he can differentiate his characters well. This adds to the fun as he mixes accents and verbal mannerisms (Polyphemus reminded me of the Cookie Monster) in an energetic and colorful telling. It also helps that there is a more-or-less continuous musical background. Celtic harp and 12-string guitar are rarely obtrusive, but rather provide push to the narration.
Anyway, to us, The Odyssey is a story, not a guide for living, but it is one of the central stories of our culture. And here we get that story (without undergoing trial by recitation), which is all that most of us want, really.

As one who actually listened to this as a child...

The talent here is amazing. I am a great admirer of Odds Bodkin. I enjoyed this recording as a child--I would listen to it as I got ready for school, or as I painted or drew.

I would definitely say it takes a certain kind of kid to enjoy it, but it opened the door to mythology for me.

Now I write this in appreciation for the man's talent. He preformed this as a bard would perform it with no script and no breaks, as he performs most of his work. He makes it engaging for the listener with an entire cast of voices and sound effects, both from his own mouth, and music preformed by him.

It's not just a "shut up for god's sake!" tape for the car, it is an experience for your child--one that I enjoyed immensely then, and still enjoy now from time to time.

I can't wait to share it with my own children.

Beautiful and original catalogue / exhibition theme

This catalogue documents a very open research, and is quite handy if you can't make it to New York to see the show.
The texts are well written in a precise but understandable manner. The viewpoint on drawing as an expanded practice is very contemporary and thorough. Unmissable if you want to learn about drawing and its adjacent fields throughout the XXth century into now. Very very good purchase.

This book is a classic in its field

This is a great book to help explain the concepts of tznius (modesty) and sexual impropriety. I believe it was aimed at a younger audience but it explains the subject so well, that any age will benefit. This is a rare find because I believe that it has been out of print since I read it in yeshiva about 28 years ago.

About the Author
Rakesh V. Vohra is the John L. and Helen Kellogg Professor of Managerial Economics and Decision Sciences at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, where he is also Director of the Center for Mathematical Studies in Economics and Management Science. He previously taught at the Fisher School of Business, Ohio State University and is the author of Advanced Mathematical Economics (2005). Professor Vohra has also completed a manuscript on the principles of pricing with Lakshman Krishnamurthi, Professor of Marketing at the Kellogg School. Professor Vohra received his doctorate in mathematics from the University of Maryland.

Willard Van Orman Quine (1908--2000) held the Edgar Pierce Chair of Philosophy at Harvard University from 1956 to 2000. Considered one the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century, he is the author of Mathematical Logic, The Roots of Reference, The Time of My Life: An Autobiography (MIT Press), and many other books.

Patricia S. Churchland is President's Professor of Philosophy Emerita at the University of California, San Diego, and Adjunct Professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Sciences. She is the author of many books, including Neurophilosophy and Brain-Wise (both published by the MIT Press).

Dagfinn F�llesdal is C. I. Lewis Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, at Stanford University.

Willard Van Orman Quine (1908-2000) was an American philosopher and logician who taught at Harvard University, and wrote many books such as From a Logical Point of View: Logici-Philosophical Essays, The Web of Belief, etc. [NOTE: Page numbers below refer to the 294-page paperback edition.)

He wrote in the Preface to this 1960 book, “Language is a social art. In acquiring it we have to depend entirely on intersubjectively available cues as to what to say and when. Hence there is no justification for collating linguistic meanings, unless in terms of men’s dispositions to respond overtly to socially observable stimulations. An effect or recognizing this limitation is that the enterprise of translation is found to be involved in a certain systematic indeterminacy… The indeterminacy of translation invests even the question what objects to construe a term as true of. Studies of the semantics of reference consequently turn out to make sense only when directed upon substantially our language, from within. But we do remain free to reflect, thus parochially, on the development and structure of our own referential apparatus…” (Pg. ix)

He points out, “We cannot strip away the conceptual trappings sentence by sentence and leave a description of the conceptual world, and man as a part of it, and thus find out what cues he would have of what goes on around him. Subtracting his cues from his world view, we get man’s net contribution to the difference. This difference marks the extent of man’s conceptual sovereignty---the domain within which he can revise theory while saving the data.” (Pg. 5)

He explains, “The philosophical doctrine of the infallibility of observation sentences is sustained under our version. For there is scope for error and dispute only insofar as the connections with experience whereby sentences are appraised are multifarious and indirect, mediated through time by theory in conflicting ways; there is none insofar as verdicts to a sentence are directly keyed to present stimulation… Our version of observation sentences departs from a philosophical tradition in allowing the sentences to be about ordinary things instead of requiring them to report sense data…” (Pg. 44)

He argues, “There are philosophers who stoutly maintain that ‘exists’ said of numbers, classes, and the like and ‘exists’ said of material objects are two usages of an ambiguous term ‘exists.’ What mainly baffles me is the stoutness of their maintenance. What can they possibly count as evidence? Why not view ‘true’ as unambiguous but very general, and recognize the difference true logical laws and true confessions as a difference merely between logical laws and confessions? And correspondingly for existence?” (Pg. 131)

He suggests, “The primary distinction of eternal sentences is that they are the repository of truth itself, so and of all science. Insofar as a sentence can be said simply to be true, and not just true now or in this month, it is an eternal sentence. When our objective is an austere canonical form for the system of the world, we are not to rest with the renunciation of propositional attitudes and the subjunctive conditional; we must renounce also the indicator words and other sources of truth-value fluctuation.” (Pg. 227-228)

He states, “This construction is paradigmatic of what we are most typically up to when in a philosophical spirit we offer an ‘analysis’ or ‘explication’ of some hitherto inadequately formulated ‘idea’ or expression. We do not claim synonomy. We do not claim to make clear and explicit what the users of the unclear expression had unconsciously in mind all along. We do not expose hidden meanings, as the words ‘analysis’ and ‘explication’ would suggest; we supply lacks. We fix on the particular functions of the unclear expression that make it worth troubling about, and then devise a substitute, clear and couched in terms of our liking, that fills those functions. Beyond those conditions of partial agreement, dictated by our interests and purposes, any traits of the explicans come under the head of ‘don’t cares.’” (Pg. 258-259)

Herbert Pierce has a problem: his wife Mildred told him he had to give up his lady friend or move out (Chapter 1). Bert inherited a ranch in Glendale and subdivided it to become rich. He invested in stocks on margin and was wiped out in 1929. Mildred is skilled in baking cakes. Eleven year old Veda quickly noticed her father's absence. [Is her snobbery a fatal flaw?] Their home may be in foreclosure soon. Mrs. Gessler educates Mildred about men (Chapter 2). Mildred learned about employment opportunities, and found a job as a waitress (Chapter 3). Mildred got Bert's car (Chapter 4). Mildred saw an opportunity to bake cakes for the restaurant (Chapter 5). She tries to beat some sense into Veda. Mildred studied the operation of the restaurant to learn the business for her future (Chapter 6). Wally explains how Mildred can buy property for her planned restaurant.

Mildred met Monty Beragon and became involved with him (Chapter 7). The youngest daughter gets the grippe, goes to the hospital, and dies (Chapter 8). Chapter 9 describes the operation of her small restaurant. "Salad is served first in California." Her first day was a success, people loved home-made waffles. There is a sly reference to Hoover and Roosevelt (Chapter 10). Veda will take piano lessons from an expert. The Beragon family went bust and had to sell their palatial residence in Pasadena. [Are those who are born into wealth helpless without it?] Mildred speaks her mind to Monty. The Repeal of Prohibition starts Chapter 11. Mildred started to serve cocktails and drew bigger and better dinner trade. Veda reveals her perverse nature on Christmas day. Was Veda corrupted by Monty? Mildred tells off Monty and breaks up with him.

Mildred's restaurant is doing well, she starts a branch in Beverly (Chapter 12). Then another in Laguna Beach. A wealthy Mildred incorporates as a safeguard against lawsuits. Veda devoted her whole time to music, but was not taken on as a pupil by a famous maestro. Veda grew up and spent time with her new friends (Chapter 13). Did she get into a mess of trouble? Mildred throws her out of their "hovel"! Mildred learns that Veda has a job singing on a popular radio program (Chapter 14). Mr. Treviso warns Mildred. The now wealthy Mildred buys the Beragon mansion (Chapter 15). Veda sings at the Hollywood Bowl (Chapter 16)! The house was a heavy financial load, and new competition affected business to a great extent. Mildred must now choose between work and pleasure. One night Mildred gets the shock of her life! Chapter 17 ends the story. Mildred has lost her business and was poor again, but not vanquished. Veda will move to New York for a new start. Will Mildred begin her life over again? What will Veda do with her life? Dump Monty? Does anyone care?

This is a more complex story than Cain's earlier novels. The number of racy scenes made it scandalous, as well as the personal life of Mildred. This book tells about life then from its background details. It also educates about starting a small business. Adopting a life of leisure can be poisonous to a small business owner. Most of all it is a warning about certain personality types; you may encounter them in your life. Like his earlier novels, this is a story about betrayal and the punishment for moral lapses. The book is much better than the film. [Would Jerry Springer ever have a show where the mother and daughter were in a romance with the same man?]

I loved the book even more than the movie because the movie was not as true to the book. However, the book I received was very old, which I didn't mind, but the last page was torn in half. Torn in half, the last page. Lucky I knew the ending.

Phenomenally practical guide

Phenomenally practical guide for designing and developing REST services using the Spring Framework, Spring Boot, Spring Web MVC, and Spring Data. Unlike many technical books in the marketplace, this guide truly walks the reader step-by-step through the development process from square one, in this case to build a small application that demonstrates all of the core features modern REST services should provide.

In my case, working through this text followed a reading of "RESTful Java Patterns and Best Practices", by Bhakti Mehta, which provides a bigger picture view than is typically offered by other resources concentrating on specific technologies, and is among the very few available newer texts on the subject in the 2015 marketplace. Anyone newer to REST services might want to first check out this other book as well, keeping in mind that it was written from the perspective of the JAX-RS 2.0 API rather than Spring.

After an initial introduction to REST from a conceptual perspective, the authors offer a primer on Spring Web MVC for those who are not familiar with this particular Spring component, followed by an introduction to REST services by using Spring Boot to build a first application, and the design and development of a more complex application that will be worked on in an iterative fashion throughout the rest of the book, complete with error handling, documentation, versioning, paging, sorting, security, and testing.

In addition, the last chapter presents a small chapter on Spring HATEOAS and an even smaller 3-page appendix on installing cURL on Windows. The appendix might be considered convenient for some readers, but the material offered is essentially the same as on the cURL website. While I did not work through the last two chapters (which cover testing and Spring HATEOAS), I did work through 100% of the development covered in the rest of the book (the first eight chapters and the appendix), and for the most part the content offered is phenomenal.

For the most part, the first five chapters (the first 90 of approximately 175 pages) are error-free, with a couple dozen rather small coding issues that are typically mismatches between code and accompanying explanations. While I am surprised at myself for saying so, I actually did not end up minding these issues because it forced me to work them out. The publisher offers the code for this book in a ZIP file, but I do not recommend blindly using this code, because in my experience doing so inhibits the learning process. That said, I did take a look at the code on a couple occasions when issues were insurmountable.

Although the chapter on security (Chapter 7) has a couple issues, in my opinion, such as the magical replacement of @EnableWebSecurity with @EnableWebMvcSecurity in the OAuth 2.0 example, without explaining that this needs to be done, and without explaining the difference between these annotations (the Spring documentation explains that the latter adds AuthenticationPrincipalArgumentResolver), in general this chapter is very well put together, walking the reader through 6 popular approaches used for securing REST services, it is really only the chapter on documenting REST services (chapter 6) where the reader will likely need to turn to other sources.

In my case, I turned to the Springfox Reference Documentation for its guide on setting up Swagger UI. As explained by the guide, the Springfox suite of Java libraries are all about automating the generation of machine and human readable specifications for JSON APIs. The interesting thing, however, that often happens with published technical presentations presented by individuals such as Varanasi and Belida, however, is that information can get quickly outdated. In the case at hand, Swagger is now Springfox, the Maven dependencies now require Swagger2 rather than Swagger, and some of the packages have been completely renamed.

The out-of-the-box configuration of Swagger UI is actually quite good, once you understand how to incorporate it into the project, and quite easy (only two Maven dependencies and a single annotation is all that it takes to get you going). The confusion surrounding what is now being called Springfox can be surpassed relatively quickly, and the decision by the authors to include this chapter was a good one.

As an architect, I especially appreciated Chapter 1 ("Introduction to REST") for its explanations of resources, templates, HTTP methods and status codes, Chapter 3 ("RESTful Spring") for its presentation on the three different options to generate a new Spring Boot project, where I used the command line interface (CLI), Chapter 4 ("Beginning QuickPoll Application") for tying together all of the previously explained topics into workable code that is thoroughly annotated, and Chapter 8 ("Security") for transforming the example code base to use Basic Authentication, and later OAuth 2.0 (albeit with an in-memory token store for the authentication server and resource server).

In Depth coverage of REST with Spring MVC, Spring Boot - Love it !

Very rarely, I have come across a book so complete in illustrating the finer details of Spring MVC, Spring Boot and REST. The whole book progressively develops one complete application through the chapters. The reader would get a complete application after each chapter.
The first few chapters talk about design aspects of RESTful applications followed by Spring MVC fundamentals.
The beauty of using Spring Boot as the framework, has kept much of the boilerplate configuration of RESTful Java applications to a minimum. Also, the application is complex enough, so that, it encompasses Spring Data as the Persistence Layer, using JPA Annotations, making it a complete front-to-back end data flow. It also implements Spring Security for authentication.
This is not a beginners guide to Spring Core or Spring MVC. But, readers with moderate knowledge of Spring Core and Spring MVC would be immensely benefited on their goal towards mastering Spring REST and RESTful web service development !

A very good effort , Balaji and Sudha ! ! Could you get together and create another book on Spring Data , maybe ! !

Well Intended Easy Intro but Needlessly Complicated Primer Chapter which Will Most Likely Confuse New Java Deveopers

Seems well intended but very odd Spring MVC Primer chapter -- if you can work through that, then its an easy intro. The big issue with Spring MVC is that it is a general purpose framework and not necessarily targeted for REST (unlike Jersey) but the Primer chapter goes into the general purpose usage -- so its needlessly confusing (note the title of the book). Also, says you need a thorough understanding of Dependency Injection and Aspect Oriented Programming -- which in my years of coding I rarely need -- however a working knowledge of it is generally required by all Java developers and for the purposes of this book, all that is needed.

Three stars because I can see a junior Java developer getting stuck on what should be a simple intro for a pretty simple treatment on a very powerful framework. If you are a junior woodchuck Java developer, the book is probably OK but look for another REST/MVC primer so you don't get discouraged and not finish up the book.

In this collection of essays, Abrahamian ( The Iranian Mojahedin , LJ 5/1/89) challenges the Western perception of Khomeini as a fundamentalist. He argues instead that Khomeini was a populist and that the current Iranian Islamic Republic has largely abandoned terrorism for pragmatism. Khomeini is presented as a radical cleric who broke with traditional Iranian Shi'ism to pursue social and economic reforms--an interpretation that ignores Shi'ism's revolutionary origins as a reaction of the have-nots to the Sunni Umayyad Caliphate. Abrahamian instead sees Khomeini as a champion of Iran's petite bourgeoisie and a defender of individual property rights, in this regard likening Khomeini's efforts to what he calls Latin American Populism. Khomein's Populist, religious and cultural authenticity

Abrahamian's essays from 1993 argue that Khomeini was an astute religious Populist who did not micro manage the revolution but helped motivate, encourage, and lead a revolt that was against irreligious Royalty, foreign interests, cultural debasement of Islamic Iran and provided authenticity for Iranians.

The "Paranoid Style" in Iranian politics played a significant role in the revolution and also in the difficulty of interpretation since. Another chapter traces May Day celebrations (and what reminds one of "socialistic realist" art posters and stamps) to show evolution from elements of a worker's revolution to a nationalist bourgeois realism. The evolving perceptions of property and state (another essay) puts perspective on rhetoric of people's rights that never threatened private property but came to more strongly support a national economy so long as Iranian culture and religion were secure and foreign interests well controlled - pragmatism did not replace principle.

The most important essay argues convincingly that the "Fundamentalist" label explains little about the character or the success of the revolution. (This should be a strong reminder to the labelers of our own time who feel they explain and understand by name calling.)

Essays, perhaps necessarily, sometimes overlap and are uneven. At times they could have been briefer and tighter. A reader would do well to have some basic picture of Iranian history at least back into the 19th century. Yet the book has considerable value and the first and last essays on the "Populism" of the revolution and the "Paranoid Style" of Iranian politics are of special value.

Khomeinism: Essays on the Islamic Republic

Like most students of Iran, Abrahamian brings the academic's bias against religion having much importance. He prefers to see Khomeini's ideas "as a flexible political movement." But discount this bias and you'll find Abrahamian makes a strong and original case that "the behavior of Khomeini and the Islamic Republic has been determined less by scriptural principles than by immediate political, social, and economic needs." He makes this case the old-fashioned way, through a close reading of texts and study of events. Abrahamian's intimate knowledge of Iran imbues his short study with the sort of insight all too rare in the study of Iran; and it's certainly one of the most important books on Iran to appear in English in some years. The author catalogues the profound changes in Khomeini's thinking that took place in the era 1965-70, when he replaced many of his traditional Shi'ite beliefs with the trendy notions of European Marxism (as mediated by Leftist Iranian intellectuals). Abrahamian demonstrates the evolution of the mullahs' relations with the Left through a close analysis of May Day celebrations. Over and over again, he shows how Khomeini changed his views to fit current needs, contradicting not only himself but some of Islam's most basic tenets (such as the priority of Sacred Law over raison d'�tat). Indeed, the sainted ayatollah apparently stuck with just one tenet through his entire career: the inviolability of private property.

One of the best books about Iran's Revolution

I wish everyone who talks about iran would first read this book. it is very balanaced, and thoughtful. It has original ideas formulated by Abrahamian. these ideas came from reading khomieni in farsi. not from prejudice, or from heresay. the author did his research, and presented the revolution and the transformation of khomeini's ideas pre and post revolution the best way i have yet to read.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in gaining insight into iran from someone who actually has spent much of his life objectively and with wisdom studing it, and did research by reading the most important sources in farsi!
