Fallout from atomic testing, air and water pollution, the proliferation of pesticides and herbicides-all connected to the growing dominance of technology and corporate capitalism in American life-led a variety of constituencies to seek solutions in what came to be known as environmentalism. In addition to political and legal campaigns to effect change, an alternative form of civic participation emerged beginning in the late-1940s as growing numbers of citizens turned to what they deemed environmentally friendly consumption practices. The goal of this politically charged consumption was not only to protect themselves and their families from harm, but also to achieve social change at a time when many believed the government was placing the desires of business before the needs of its citizens. Politicians responded to the growing environmental concerns of middle class Americans, but, in the end, continual political compromises with corporate power meant weak laws and lax enforcement. Many citizens sought refuge in an alternative "green" marketplace-including organic foods, natural-fiber clothing, alternative energy, and everyday products designed to have minimal environmental impact. In doing so, they attempted to create a community for those who shared their concerns and frustrations, as well as their vision for a different American Way.

About the Author

David K. Irving is an associate professor of the Undergraduate Film and Television Department at New York University, Tisch School of the Arts. He has directed six feature films, fifteen award-winning short documentaries, three short narrative films, and has written and produced three feature films.

Peter Rea is Associate Professor of the Undergraduate Film and Television Department at New York University, Tisch School of the Arts. He has been a producer, cinematographer, editor, production manager, and postproduction supervisor on numerous short films, TV movies, and features.

Needs a Digital Cinema Makeover

Some useful content that covers a broad spectrum of production guidance. Primarily oriented toward student filmmakers in post-secondary education degree programs. Needs a more current edition and a digital cinema makeover. Given the cost (even at Kindle edition pricing) it is a pretty high level view. If readers are looking for more insightful short form production guidance, there are probably other less generalized and more useful resources. Also, the special, featured web companion content was disappointing and available publicly to anyone that browses the Focal Press web site. Drop the price or add more value.

Not as good as Silent Night from the same publisher

I bought this book because we liked the Silent Night one that came out a few years ago. In that book, softly fluctuating lights surrounded Baby Jesus as gentle music played. In The Little Drummer Boy, a startlingly bright and frenetically flashing star shoots out of Joseph's ear in what appears to be an attempt at inducing seizures. Probably for legal reasons, the music is not the familiar "Little Drummer Boy" song, but a not-so-bad tune with a "rum-pa-pum-pum" drum rhythm in the background. Not-so-bad, that is, until your child has played it for the fiftieth time. I wonder who we can give this to . . .

Review of my recent purchase

I purchased this book from another company and loved it. That book came wrapped in cellophane. I thought I was buying new books when I purchased these. We're obviously used. Not wrapped in cellophane, and one of the books had dead batteries in it. Since I buy these books for charity, I replaced the batteries and said nothing. Glad you asked.

Not the original drummer boy song but my toddlers love to push the button and hear the music. It is quite loud, so not one I let them play without me there to muffle the speaker a bit.

Waited over ten years for this book for it to be so repetitive . It was the same rollercoaster ride for the whole book and then ends on a cliff hanger . I wouldn't be so upset if the book was cheaper 10.00 for recycled information no growth as characters .

Not what I expected

I like Keisha Ervin and that's why I couldn't bring myself to give this book one star. The book was too repetitive with no growth from any of the characters. No details on the supporting characters, and I could have sworn Brooke was the one that ended up with Jaylen in the first book. Maybe I need to re-visit. This book just wasn't what I expected it to be.

This book was a waste of $10, there was no growth in these characters at all and it was about 3,000 pages of a grown 30 year old woman being dumb as hell. Like seriously what was the purpose of even writing this book?? I love Keisha but this was a total disappointment

This book is a loose-leaf binder full of worksheets you can photocopy for teaching metaphors in daily English use. The worksheets mainly use British English, but they are high quality thus useful no matter what. This book is best used with more advanced students. I like this book a great deal because it is easy to use and there are not many books on the market about this topic.

Excellent Biography of a Runaway Girl

Exceptionally well written. Her overall story is compelling, with descriptions of the events and situations she lived that ring true. Rather than overstating and embellishing the truth for dramatic effect, Carissa's story of hope and possibility rings true and accurate. It is refreshing to hear her biography, including a childhood with some crappy circumstances, told without the sense of self-pity, victim-hood and entitlement that is so prevalent today. She has risen above the abuse she endured.
This book opens the door for people from all walks of life to partially understand life on the streets in America, but also may be especially helpful for at-risk youth who are flirting with dangerous forces such as substance abuse and human trafficking.

Slow to start, slow to finish. The majority was good. One of my issues is that I think she left a lot out of the book as to growing up in a "troubled home" and being abused. The way it appears is that her stepfather threw her out of the front door while she was in second grade. Then, she ran away at the age of 12 because she got grounded and her siblings picked on her. That happens to the majority of us, so I guess I don't understand what was so bad that she went through what she did. I needed more background. And I'd like to know where she got the money for all of her schooling. It was well written, with less than a handful of typos. I would recommend reading it.

Not What You May Think

For those who are looking for a guide to the poems, I would suggest David Ross' "Critical Companion...." which is far more informative when it comes to each poem, although he does not analyze every poem. Unterecker's work attempts to present overall themes that unify the diversity of masks that Yeats often assumes but too often waddles into biographical interpretation. For instance, a poem about the poet's spiritual struggle to create amid a chaotic world that makes so many demands it could spiritually kill you, evolves into a commentary on Yeats and the idealized female and the parallels of that real person to an Irish myth. Yeats often uses this motif, but it serves as an idea to think beyond the simple relationship of a man obsessed with a woman. This approach is interesting - and sometimes helpful- but, as one reviewer said, the text reads like a high school essay of sorts. Consequently, the title should not claim to be a guide but an overview of the works by a complex writer.

Disappointing.

I was hoping for a companion to read alongside the poetry, helping me understand Yeats' sometimes complex language and obscure imagery. Unfortunately, the Reader's Guide is a set of obscure essays on what Yeats may or may not have meant, with no connection to specific poems except that most of them are touched upon somewhere in the index. Nor does it make up for its lack of practical usefulness by being brilliant in itself; it reads like an overwrought book report.

I suppose it would be too much to hope that somebody would write a line-by-line translation into accessible modern American English, but that's what would help this American enjoy Yeats.
