The first part of the book, following a historical introduction, constructs the strati� graphic framework of fluvial deposits, step by step, starting with lithofacies, combining these into architectural elements and other facies associations, and then showing how these, in turn, combine to represent distinctive fluvial styles. Next, the discussion turns to problems of correlation and the building of large-scale stratigraphic frameworks. These basin-scale constructions form the basis for a discussion of causes and processes, including autogenic processes of channel shifting and cyclicity, and the larger questions of allogenic (tectonic, eustatic, and climatic) sedimentary controls and the development of our ideas about nonmarine sequence stratigraphy.

It sets out in detail the methods for the field and subsurface study of these sediments, and provides geologists with detailed descriptions of the building blocks of fluvial stratigraphic units, from lithofacies through architectural elements and depositional systems to large-scale stratigraphic sequences and basin-fill complexes. This book also examines at length autogenic sedimentary controls and discusses the tectonic and climatic controls of fluvial sedimentation and the effects of base level change on sequence architecture. The book contains a new classification of oil and gas fields in fluvial reservoirs, with descriptions of selected case examples. Profusely illustrated and with an extensive reference to the recent literature this textbook will be welcomed by the student and professional geologist alike.

"The Geology of Fluvial Deposits.." is an outstanding book on this matter. Mr. Miall, as usual, has got to achieve the main and crucial points regarding fluvial environment. This book is the best reference on fluvial sedimentation I have ever read.

Black and white only for illustrations and photographs

Good content other than the illustrations and photos, howver; the photos and diagrams are all in black and white.

The publishers and author here just printed the course notes from his lectures without much quality added. Alot of the diagrams are ok but the photographs of outcrops examples and some of the diagramatical models are difficult to see much of the details that would make the book much richer in content and aid in the understanding of the written material. The photos have been blurred or purposefully de-resolutioned by the printing process as well. This can't be observed in the graphic preview that Amazon provides because they show no content with photos or diagrams (only the cover, Title, preview, table of contents and bibliography pages).

Look, this is an age where computers and printers have the capacity to handle more detail provided by color saturation.

For 100 bucks you should get more. Just a money grab by the professor and the publishing company IMO. I'm disappointed.

This is a book that is being promoted as a first edition, even though the first edition came out in 1996. If this is a second edition with significant updates and additions, then that should be made clear in the book description.

Important skills in a nutshell

I am an independent consultant (education) and use Ingrid Bens' books in my own facilitation and in training teacher leaders. Her information is presented in a perfect blend of rationale (you have to know a little bit of "why" to make it work) and practical strategies. It is all grounded in theory but the books aren't bogged down in it. This particular little gem has the basic strategies and is easily tucked into a bag for quick references. I would recommend purchasing the larger, full volume books first and using this as an additional resource. For anyone who works with groups of people--this is a valuable asset and well worth the investment.

Great little portable book. Love the spiral binding!!

This is a very short and concise pocket guide for facilitators. I use it as more of a memory jogger when I need some ideas on a different approach to facilitate my cases.

Plus it has an excellent spiral binding! Someone put a lot of thought into this book, and I wish I could find an outline like this for other subjects.

I have recommended this book to many facilitator friends and they loved it, and we're very surprised this book was even on the market!

Thoroughly enjoying working through this book. Lots of info and techniques. Will be using this as a reference for many years. The CD that is enclosed helps to explain some of the less easily understood techniques by giving great examples of what the sounds are that you are trying for.

Fred Sokolow is a great musician and instructor. This book will take the ukulele strummer into the world of ukulele fingerpicking in a very satisfying way. The material is well graded from beginner to intermediate and advanced. The various styles are clearly presented and illustrated, and the tunes used are quite well known. For those who want to take their ukulele playing to a new level, this book will serve as a very useful tool.

Melodies are pretty basic, tabs underneath. Progressively harder ie chords for song, basic melody for song, basic melody w chords, rolls interspersed in song. Various options for playing the chords through out a song depending on time signature. ( Not different chord shapes but variations on which strings of that chord you play separately or together, in a pattern, within a bar or two. ) There's a lot in here to try. Not advanced rocket science stuff. I am intermediate self taught. I can play everything in here. It's the introduction of different ways to play the chords/rolls/styles that I liked. I can apply that to other songs I play.

K-Gr 3-This picture-book reworking of "Jack and the Beanstalk" begins with Jack's mother throwing the beans out the window and the adventurous boy climbing the resultant beanstalk and sneaking into the giant's castle. But instead of becoming the meal, Jack is treated to a lesson in healthy eating by Waldorf the giant, following the USDA guidelines. Each food group is reviewed, with options included that are often overlooked in traditional texts (quinoa and couscous among the grains, scallops and sardines among the proteins). The tale ends with Jack, the giant, and the giant's wife dining together and discussing possible exercises ("we could toss boulders," says the giant). Back matter has information about the MyPlate model, foods to avoid, links to activity pages, and the MyPlate government website. Ths is a great teaching tool; children will enjoy the twist on the familiar fairy tale; the clear, accessible information; and the colorful, cartoonlike digital illustrations.-Jasmine L. Obviously written by an educator!

I found this book via Teachers Pay Teachers website and I'm so glad I did. I originally planned to use it w/just my 2nd grade Health classes, but ended up using it for first grade and kindergarten, too, because it does such a great job of teaching the basics of MyPlate. I thought it was a bit "cheesy' and was worried how my students would respond, but they loved it! Surprisingly, this book took an entire 30 minute lesson, between reading the book and the ensuing discussion about each page. There are lesson plans/activities available to go along with this book at Teachers Pay Teachers.

A twist on a familiar tale. The tale starts out like the traditional fairy tale but soon we are surprised to learn that the giant doesn’t want to eat Jack but instead together create a healthy meal. This book is perfect for K-2 classrooms when teaching healthy eating, but don’t stop there. It can also be used:
• at a health fair.
• by a gym teacher when teaching anytime vs. some time foods.
• to compare/contract two texts (multiple versions of the fairy tale).
• to expand students’ fluency through ellipses and word size.
• in writing to model how authors play with word size and location on the page.
• to set up a class debate on it corn is a vegetable (as stated in the book) or a grain.
Loreen Leedy also includes additional activity pages on her website as well as a view of sample pages. There is also supplementary information on the USDA MyPlate program that compliments this book. 5 stars!

Introduce your little ones to the government's healthy eating guide

In this new spin on the classic tale “Jack and the Beanstalk,” Loreen Leedy tells the story of what Jack finds at the top of that mysterious beanstalk: a very hungry giant! At first, Jack is afraid he's destined to become Waldorf the giant's next meal, but instead the giant teaches him about healthy eating. They discuss vegetables, fruits, grains, different sources of protein. Jack learns about the idea of filling his plate with half fruits and veggies, half grains and protein, and then topping it off with a serving of dairy. This colorfully-illustrated book introduces youngsters to the government's current guide to healthy eating: MyPlate. It helps kids to differentiate between different fruits and vegetables, and to understand all of the many foods that are technically a form of grain. It also gives them a well-rounded idea of what a protein food is; these days, there are options beyond just meat! Some may think this book little more than thinly-veiled government propaganda, and they're probably right; still, this is a cute and clever introduction to healthy eating that many families will likely enjoy.
