The aging orc shaman Ner'zhul has seized control of the Horde and reopened the Dark Portal. His brutal warriors once again encroach upon Azeroth, laying siege to the newly constructed stronghold of Nethergarde Keep. There, the archmage Khadgar and the Alliance commander, Turalyon, lead humanity and its elven and dwarven allies in fighting this new invasion.
Even so, disturbing questions arise. Khadgar learns of orcish incursions farther abroad: small groups of orcs who seem to pursue a goal other than simple conquest. Worse yet, black dragons have been sighted as well, and they appear to be aiding the orcs. To counter Ner'zhul's dark schemes, the Alliance must now invade the orcs' ruined homeworld of Draenor. Can Khadgar and his companions stop the nefarious shaman in time to stave off the destruction of two worlds?

Fair book, essential lore
By Mark
Not as good as "Tides of Darkness" by the same author. The book has some cringe-worthy romantic moments and moves sort of slowly.
Just like "Tides of Darkness," the book would have benefited from maps and campaign trails. My memory of playing through Burning Crusade served me well, but I would much have preferred to see a map of the area laid out before me.
In general, this novel offers some essential Warcraft lore and sets the stage for later events. We see where places like Honor Hold come from and learn why certain orcs are in certain places doing the things we see them doing in WoW.
Rise of the Horde is still the way better book. For that reason, I suppose it's fair to conclude that Christie Golden is the better writer than Rosenburg.

The WoW Guide to Mythology
By Reasonable Reviewer
If you are a long time World of Warcraft fan then this is a good collection of the mythology all gathered in one place.
There are a few illustrations, but it is not a coffee table, lavishly illustrated work like some of the previous WoW books.
This is more like Goldfinch's guide to WoW mythology.
It reads like the internal Blizzard designer guide set to print.
The book is informative.

For those interested in Warcraft lore, a must read.
By Mario
I recently got back into WoW and one of my favorite things about the game is the lore behind it. It is a world with a rich history and fascinating characters.
This is the second Warcraft novel I've read, the first being The Rise of he Horde. I think this book is much better. There is plenty of action, epic battles and events of momentous scale. Both heroes and villains are well portrayed and you get to understand their motivations. For example Ner'zul starts as a well meaning shaman trying to help his people but is corrupted by the demonic powers he dabbled in.
It also reveals how Draenor became Outland, and what happened to the Alliance expeditionary force that was sent to close the portal.
I really enjoyed this book, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in WoW and it's lore.
