About the Author
Dr. Julia Riede is a nuclear physicist in love with her knitting needles. She has been taught how to knit by her grandmother in her early childhood in Austria and never stopped since. After many years of following knitting patterns of others, she finally decided to start creating her own back in 2008 which led to the publication of over 40 knitting patterns, four books and countless blog posts on how to design shawls, create your own knitting patterns and how to improve your knitting skills. (2) The Hug Me circular shawl instructions follow the template pretty well, except the 3rd Section calls for working ...

There are enough errors in the book that I lost faith in any of the instructions. Here are some examples: (1) "8.2 Pattern Template: Raglan Shaped Faroese Shawl." The instructions say to work border stitches in garter until the number of rows equals 2 times the number of sts in the center panel pattern plus 10 rows of the border pattern with one selvedge stitch (which is actually a balance stitch for the lace pattern, and where did the "10" come from?). This formula can't possibly work when the following instruction says to pick up not only the no. of sts for the center panel but also an additional 6 sts (3 for each shoulder which would be 12 more rows not 10 plus 2 more for the "selvedge" st). (2) The Hug Me circular shawl instructions follow the template pretty well, except the 3rd Section calls for working 48 rounds of chart III, but chart III only has 22 lines in it. Section IV says to work 26 rounds of the same chart. I emailed the author and got no response. Templates for various shawl shapes is a great idea, but this book wasn't ready for publication. I hope a 2nd edition will be published that has been thoroughly proofed. I definitely didn't get my money's worth on this one.

Design Your Own Circular or Crescent Shawl

This is the second book in the series on shawl construction. In this book, the author tells how to design different types of circular shawls, crescent shawls (worked sideways and with short rows), and Faroese shawls. Although this book is a little shorter than the first volume, it gives clear instructions for creating shawl shapes that have become very popular lately (example: the crescent shawl).
The author analyzes each type of shawl to describe what geometric shape (or combination of geometric shapes) the shawl is made of. Then she explains how to make it. There are line diagrams to help the knitter visualize how the shape is created, a knitting template, and a sample shawl pattern given for each type.
This is a book for people who want to design their own shawls, but do not have the time/expertise to figure out the formula for creating a specific geometric shape. I am eagerly awaiting the third volume in the series, which will deal with shapes that are more unusual such as the star shape, s-curve, etc.

A bit more than I can handle. Not that many patterns and more of a how to create your own. Hard to understand. But math fans will love it.
