Very Basic Overview of Neurobiology Concepts

Compared to the other books in the "How it Works" series, this one wasn't quite as good. I tried reading it before my medical school neuroanatomy and neurobiology course and found it to be very frustrating going. I don't think most people can easily get through this book if they have no background in neuro at all. After I finished my course, I re-read the book, and this time I was able to get all the way through it. Of course, it was a lot more basic than what I had learned in school, but it still helped me to review the neurobiology concepts we had covered. There is not much of a neuroanatomy review in this book, however, so you'll have to get a different book if you want to review brain anatomy, spinal pathways, etc. The things that I did like about the book are its short length, the illustrations, the interlude sections, and the author's conversational writing style. I would recommend reading this book during or right after a neurobiology course to help solidify the concepts, but not as a layman's first introduction to the subject.

This is a great book for those who are not up to date on their neuroscience. Easy to understand and a fast read. Too bad they won't make more copies. It really is a good book. I know some classrooms still use it to this day!
