Must have for any ESL Professional

Dr. Shope has done a marvelous job of pulling together her 30+ years of experience and synthesizing her wisdom into a comprehensive TESOL guide. Anyone thinking about, or currently working as an ESL professional in the United States or abroad needs a copy of this book. Dr. Shope's practical approaches are a must have when you're in the classroom.

I'm currently using her guide in South Korea as a go to resource for my day-to-day lesson planning and course development.

A Step Ahead for Entering the TESOL World

I wish I had this book when I left for Japan. Working for a private English school that provided the way they wanted English taught was one thing, but going without any idea whatsoever was another. This is an excellent book for those just entering the TESOL world or even for those wanting a fresh and well ordered structure to getting the job accomplished even better. Understanding what is needed from the facilitator to get the students engaged and learning English as quick and painlessly as possible is a must. This book takes you from the very basics of language all the way into method and understanding cultural differences. A MUST for TESOL teachers.

Poorly done. Get something different.

Poorly written and organized. Every answer does not have an explaination why it is the right answer nor why the other answers are incorrect. I also found missing answers keys.
I do not trust the answer key now nor questions. For the most part, it's all there but if I'm finding errors, however few, it's a poor test prep guide. Get something else.

Great book--Bad Kindle version

This edited volume presents a viable argument for anthropology as a needed discipline for not only discovering the exotic 'Other,' but also for shedding light on all kinds of social issues around the globe. The variety of topics as well as the inclusion of quite a bit of material based in Europe was helpful, particularly since my focus is on European Anthropology.

My only complaint is that the Kindle version is very poorly edited. Multiple sentences are missing words--often the first word in the sentence.

About the Author

Andrew Gillies is a freelance interpreter working primarily for EU and European Institutions in Brussels, Paris and Munich. This book is not very good

This book promotes itself as a comprehensive resource for understanding consultation within a school setting. I am a school counselor, and I would not recommend it. While it may be some support for someone considering entering the school counseling profession, most of what I found inside of it should be common knowledge in any school counseling graduate program. Simply stated, if you don't pick up the information in this book during your graduate coursework, you should absolutely get it during your practicum or internship.

The chapters really don't offer that much as far as information that isn't common to most school counselors. For example, Chapter 6, Workshops and Educational Programs, is nothing more than product reviews of several parenting programs that are on the market. Very little information in this chapter, and I'd go so far to question why it is even in the book other than to provide filler.

The opportunities to provide consultation discussed in Chapter 7 are simply details on how a student support team is organized and suggestions on how to set up a referral process. Again, most of this details programs that are already in place in most schools. Unless one is entering a school that has never done anything in support of a student, or unless the counselor has never set foot in a school, this is probably already in place.

Throughout the book, ideas are suggested that involve a excessive amounts of instructional time, after-school time, or that stretch over the course of several days. Perhaps this may work in some districts, but in many, time is sacred and the counselor is simply not going to get that much time to conduct training sessions. There are simply to many other duties that have to be attended to during the day. Again, the idea seems geared more toward an idealistic school setting and not real life.

Finally, since I mentioned filler earlier... Appendix A discusses Adlerian Theory, the apparent theory of choice for these authors, and Appendix B and C are the ethical standards for school counselors. Just what I want to find in a $50 dollar book.. Ethical standards that are free for download or otherwise readily available.

Overall, I really think this book is horrible and not worth the approximate $50.00 price tag that it has. If you have to have it for a class, buy it used... otherwise, save yourself the trouble of even owning it and just pay attention in your grad classes.

I am in my 2nd semester for an MA in School Guidance Counseling. The text offers examples of dialogue to use for different situations. It is an easy and informative read. This text would also be good for teachers starting out their careers.

Literally Drew Blood!

I thought when I ordered the books that all this thrash about the packaging MUST be overblown. But this is, without a doubt the worst packaging I've ever dealt with. Though the plastic case was damaged in shipping it was still a struggle to free the books. When pulled apart (which is what a small sticker on one of the books advises) the plastic shattered. One piece dug into the palm of my hand and gave me a pretty decent gash. Other smaller fragments ended up all over my room. All I could think was thank God I didn't lose an eye! Even then I only succeeded in liberating one book.

The books themselves are very nice, and were only slighty damaged in the ludicrous struggle to liberate them from the case. It's comical that they come in the worst designed packaging you can imagine.

So while I would recommend the books, I also strongly suggest protective eye wear for the unboxing.

UPDATE: typos galore! + Alert them to the need for "special packing" of this item

I've already reviewed this book, and made a complaint about its packaging. But now, after having read it cover-to-cover, I was both delighted and dismayed. As a graphic designer, I have an "eagle eye" for design errors and typographical mistakes, but I also can pick out typos easily. I wished an editor had gone through the galleys thoroughly before it went to print. After about fifty mistakes I said to myself, "I should have been flagging these, then sell them to Phaidon for the next printing." I was too lazy, and continued on to find at least another fifty! One page had a paragraph repeat four times (as if the designer was filling a space, waiting for the "expanded" copy to come in to replace it). Shame on you Phaidon for putting so much effort into photography rights, etc. and barely anything into typography and editing.

Original review: One problem with the case and the sheer weight of this product is that it's likely to suffer damage if not carefully packed. While Amazon does have some of the best packing in the industry (especially the shrink-to-a-pallet books that cannot move to potentially damage it's corners), this item in particular was shipped to me using only air bags and a rather thin, large box. The plastic case was severly damaged, but amazingly the books weren't. Customer service was again incredibly accommodating to solving my problem of this damaged item by taking 20% off rather than the hassle of return and replace, which actually would have cost Amazon more. Plus I would have had to carry the nearly 30 lbs to the UPS store!

She was also insightful enough to suggest I make a comment on the product page re my experience so that Amazon's shipping department can take special care shipping this product to avoid it's damage. Maybe use "peanuts" instead, or some other method that ensures the weight doesn't make it jostle under the hostile conditions "handler" use with any package--book or chandelier!

Well worth the (Amazon) price

An outstanding design resource which will no doubt soon become a ubiquitous electric-yellow prop on the bookshelves in style magazines, modern furniture catalogs, and lofts of urban trendoids everywhere. It should look nice next to Rem Koolhaas's "S, M, L, XL". All kidding aside, it's well worth the (Amazon) price. Although I must agree with the previous reviewer who pointed out the poorly designed and tacky plastic "carrying case". Ironic that a design encyclopedia would make such a design mistake. Also, I question whether enough time has passed to justify the "design classic" title bestowed upon many of the more recent entries.
