Preface to The Triple Goddess Oracle

Introducing a beautiful new synergistic Goddess oracle designed and executed by three uniquely creative women in an artistic collaboration that satisfies body, mind and soul. The Triple Goddess Tarot was envisioned by Isha Lerner as a tool for living life "each day as if I were the Goddess." The deck is stunningly executed through Mara Friedman's lovely paintings which, although they stand alone in their own right, become potent oracular forces in this collaborative project that also includes the expressive communication of editor Tara McKinney. Tarot deck, chakra study, and alchemical initiation, this attractive woman-loving oracle is at once simple and complex?simple in the sense that it doesn't over-burden the reader with scholarly references, complex in that it offers a variety of ways to use the deck.

Isha Lerner's comprehensive knowledge of history, prehistory, mythology, and Goddess spirituality informs the book without overpowering it, while her personal experience with alchemy, tarot, astrology, numerology, plant medicine, and sacred sites illuminates every page. Her method is more storytelling than academic, but her purpose is clearly that of a teacher who loves her students as well as her subject. Self-revealing and candid, her willingness to expose her own evolutionary growth over a lifetime of loving the Goddess and walking the path of female spirituality is a valuable tool as well, providing a loose but authentic model for the reader.

The project is organized around the twenty-two "Major Arcana" familiar to traditional tarot users, here called "Alchemy Cards," designed with novel feminist reconstructions of the archaic versions. For instance, the Fool is now the Fairy Queen, and the Hierophant the Wise Woman. The deck involves a synthesis of Buddhist, Hindu, Celtic, Mayan, and other archetypes woven together in a kind of "tantric" blend to be used for gaining self-awareness and becoming awakened in life. The collaborators have added four original "Alchemy Cards" representing "stages of evolution yet to be embodied," plus a set of seven "Chakra Cards" that can be used either with the rest of the deck or as an oracle by itself.

Readers are urged to relax and let the oracle teach itself naturally over time and through practice. Profoundly esoteric concepts are shared without fanfare. The nurturing respect that these three women clearly share in their relationships with one another transmits itself gracefully through the content and substance of the project as a whole. Each exquisitely painted image has a loving divinatory message to help the reader navigate daily life, with the over-arching goal of grounding the audience in "a new love for the Triple Goddess in the world." In these difficult and disturbing times, I can't think of anything more useful than this unique translation of an ancient way of life that has all but been forgotten.

to walk in beauty

have only just started with the set. Am a fan of the artist's work, so expect to enjoy them. Like the concept, though this is not a true tarot as we know it with 70+ cards, but just a major arcana plus a few extras. More than a divination set, although there are layouts for that purpose, it is a set for the inner journey. I see it more for daily guidance, as well as chakra balancing. The premise that lead to this set, the idea of putting oneself in the position of the Goddess for leading one's life, is, my POV, excellent, and one that I'll be attempting, using these cards as my guides.

A bit of a disappointment. Maybe I haven't given them a real chance, but the material really wasn't new, and I got bored with them pretty quickly. I expected a lot because I had worked with Motherpeace Cards co-authored by Vicki Noble. Those cards were very helpful to me for a couple years.

Realistic advice from someone who's been there

I love this book. A quick, easy read, it gives honest and useful advice on how to start a weight loss journey. With tips for challenging yourself, setting goals, and retaining/regaining that "first day" motivation, make this a book I'll return to again and again. The author has been down the weight loss road herself, and gives a perspective that cannot be matched by those who have just "studied" weight loss and not lived it for themselves. Do realize though, that this is not a diet plan: it's a plan for making yourself ready to make realistic changes in your life. As such, I really enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone who needs a little push to start their own weight loss journey, no matter what "plan" they ultimately decide to follow.

The author also has a corresponding Facebook page, on which she personally posts & shares encouragement with readers/fans, along with challenges to keep them motivated. I highly recommend checking out the Facebook page as well.

Very Helpful and Realistic

I downloaded this book and found it to be extremely helpful. Weight loss is not a quick nor easy journey. As I get older the harder I find it to be.

The thing I liked most about this book was the author paints a very realistic picture of weight loss. This isn't another "Lose 100 pounds in One Month!" book, but instead is a true picture of where you need to start your weight loss journey. You have to get the drive and motivation first or nothing will ever come of it. You have to set realistic goals for yourself and realize that you aren't going to reach them overnight.

The first stage of setting the right mindset is indeed probably the most important one of all.

Great book and I'm definitely looking forward to continuing the series!

This is an strange type of book that I'm encountering more often lately.
It's like. one chapter. .and the idea is , you'll be hooked and buy the whole book.
I dislike the deceptive nature of this style of marketing. . I didn't understand that I was being manipulated to buy a whole book - I thought this IS the book.
And it wasn't useful to me . . because I'm already in Weight Watchers.
Not a bad book if you don't use WW. . .but I really really dislike 'tricks' in marketing. So . .only one star.

Welcome to Margrave, Georgia--but don't get too attached to the townsfolk, who are either in on a giant conspiracy, or hurtling toward violent deaths, or both. There's not much of a welcome for Jack Reacher, a casualty of the Army's peace dividend, who's drifted into town idly looking for traces of a long-dead black jazzman. Not only do the local cops arrest him for murder, but the chief of police turns eyewitness to place him on the scene, even though Reacher was getting on a bus in Tampa at the time. Two surprises follow: The murdered man wasn't the only victim, and he was Reacher's brother Joe, whom he hadn't seen in seven years. So Reacher, who so far hasn't had anything personally against the crooks who set him up for a weekend in the state pen at Warburton, clicks into overdrive. Banking on the help of the only two people in Margrave he can trust--a Harvard-educated chief of detectives who hasn't been on the job long enough to be on the take, and a smart, scrappy officer who's taken him to her bed--he sets out methodically in his brother's footsteps, trying to figure out why his cellmate in Warburton, a panicky banker whose cell-phone number turned up in Joe's shoe, confessed to a murder he obviously didn't commit; trying to figure out why all the out-of- towners on Joe's list of recent contacts were as dead as he was; and trying to stop the local carnage, or at least direct it in more positive ways. Though the testosterone flows as freely as printer's ink, Reacher is an unobtrusively sharp detective in his quieter moments--not that there are many of them to judge by. Despite the crude, tough-naif narration, debut novelist Child serves up a big, rangy plot, menace as palpable as a ticking bomb, and enough battered corpses to make an undertaker grin. Some minor quirks but a rousing good read.

I'm new to the Jack Reacher series but I have to say that I enjoyed this first book. I was interested in reading what other reviewers had to say: Author was charged with using the word "shrugged" too much. I never noticed, I was busy turning the pages I guess. Author was charged with using short, choppy sentences. Is that a literary offense? Because if it is, it's time to take Hemingway's work out and burn it, he having been critically lauded for years for that short, choppy style which is supposed to be very manly -- in a literary sense, I suppose. All I know is that I find old Hem's work mindnumbingly dull. At least Mr. Child keeps me awake, those choppy sentences lend a sense of urgency to the story. (Just like Earl Emerson's short chapters in 'Pyro'!) Author is charged with not being an expert on America. Neither am I and I've spent 48 out of 50 years here. Oh, and one review bemoaned the fact that somehow the author failed to realize the US has no Marines stationed in Europe, that we have no naval base there. Hm, I don't keep up with the exact locations of all US bases but I spent two years at Zaragoza Air Base, Spain, and when I was there, the US had a naval base at Rota. Author is charged with having a written a very violent book. Well. There you have me. It IS violent. If violence disturbs you, what the heck are you doing reading books in this genre in the first place? There was a great honking picture of a bloody handprint on the cover of the paperback I bought -- I would have thought that was a (you'll excuse the pun) dead giveaway as to the nature of this book. Oh, almost forgot. The author is also charged with too much coincidence in the brother/killing plot point. Stranger things happen every day -- gee, Bush got elected twice. I think THAT's stretching coincidence!

Yes, Jack Reacher is an anti-hero. Yes, the books has some flaws (as most every book I've ever read does). But I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to seeing Reacher's character progression in the next book. Do I think he's the next Lucas Davenport? Nope, not unless he gets a stronger sense of humor and a lot more sexy. But Reacher is verrrry interesting!

OK, I'm done defending the book. Now, here's the bit that bothered me: A top gun in the Treasury Dept drops out of sight and the Feds don't swarm all over looking for him when his prints come across the computer? A second Treasury Dept worker is brutally murdered in an airport and (1) it's the busy airport at Atlanta and no one sees it??? and (2) the Feds don't follow up on this either? Still -- I was able to suspend my disbelief long enough to overlook these things, just because I wanted to see what Jack would do next.

Jack Reacher can have my number !

I started with "Running Blind," Lee Child's third book, and finished it off in record time to jump back online to see what else Lee Child had written. The hero, Jack Reacher, was a military brat growing up, a military career man until the army downsized, and then became a drifter by choice. He's a one-man swat team correcting injustice as it finds him. In "Killing Floor" he just happens to get off the bus near the intersection of a small town in Georgia and after wandering on foot into the town of Margrave he is immediately arrested for a brutal murder which he obviously did not commit. He digs his way through several mysteries at one time including the identity of the murdered man. The suspense never lets up; there is a girl (a cop) that he loves but leaves with good romance and dialogue throughout. The only problem I had with the hero is that he arrives without any luggage and only occasionaly needs to buy a new outfit of clothes as he thows away what he has on at the time. He gives new meaning to traveling light. I'm going to quit writing now and start reading the next book..."Die Trying" I hope to see more of Jack Reacher after I have caught up with the next two.

What a Book!

Wow, what a book! Lee Child has given us perhaps the most interesting and complex hero in some time. Jack Reacher is Clint Eastwood, John Wayne and Arnold Schwarzenegger rolled into one...but with much more personality and pizzazz! I'm only sorry it's taken me so long to read Mr. Child's book!
The story is a riveting one, focusing on Jack's involvement in a crime in a small town in Georgia. Boy, does he make a mistake in deciding to stop off in this little burg, just to find out about a blue singing legend named Blind Blake. But, what a story unfolds. The dialogue is brisk, economical, and very involving! Along with Jack, there are a ton of characters that are so remarkably fleshed out and described, you would think this was a true crime story!
There are scenes of nail-biting action; very graphic and disturbing scenes of violence; and amidst all this some really well-written scenes of sensitivity and poignancy. Jack's meeting with an old lady who once knew the old blues legend is outstanding in its emotional punch! Paul Hubble, the neurotic banker; Roscoe, the beautiful policewoman; Finlay, the chief of detectives; and the evil villains are some of the best written characters in recent mystery fiction.
What is so amazing about this book is the way Lee Child has not only woven a complex murder mystery, but also a chilling tale of greed, madness, and lost loves and lives.
This is an emotional, wrenching debut, and I cannot wait to start in on the rest of this series!
An outstanding piece of fiction!

When I first started teaching theatre, I knew there were tons of resources out there, but none of them seemed to give me the practical advice I needed on a lesson by lesson basis. What were the specific "tricks" and "tools" I could use to go beyond "having fun" to actually building better actors? Eventually I realized the thing that was most helpful to me was to watch other amazing teachers in action. Nothing could replace the experience of being in the classroom and seeing what worked and what didn't.  This book is designed to recreate that experience. I've condensed 10 years of experience (with over 20,000 students in the NYC public school system) into 16 lessons of the best drama teaching curriculum. After you've read through all the lessons, you should feel like you've sat in on an entire semester of observing a professional drama teacher introduce the basics of drama to a classroom of students. 

About the Author
For nearly a decade DENVER CASADO has worked as an arts educator with New York City’s leading theatre organizations including Disney Theatricals, New York City Center and Young Audiences New York. Denver’s innovative approach to exploring theatre with kids has earned him invitations to speak at the national conferences of the American Association of Community Theatre and the American Alliance for Theatre Education. In 2011 he was honored with the All Stars Projects’ Phyllis Hyman award, in recognition of his important contribution to the creative growth and development of over 20,000 young people in the NYC public school system. My Most Useful Drama Book for teaching Young Children

As a new Drama Teacher, this was an excellent resource. I stopped stressing over what to teach each lesson. Many of these activities my kids have asked to do again and again. It's laid out the objectives clearly for me, provided reflection questions throughout and the activities are immediately engaging but teach all of the essentials. I love that it is stepped gradually up building from simple activities and gradually getting more complex. I have been following this book lesson by lesson only leaving out things when I run out of time. I have used it with 6 year olds to 11 year olds so far in the classroom and for drama club. For my drama club I pick and choose which activities suit what I want to work on but for my year 1's and 2's I've been following it pretty much lesson by lesson. It has been a godsend and saved me hours of research and planning every week!

I'm a theater teacher and this has been a godsend! It has added so much to my current lessons. It has similar ideas at times to things I've done in the past, but adds to those activities and rounds out the student's learning. It has a great flow from one lesson to the next. I'm learning a new flow in my classroom because of this. Definitely recommend!

Good handbook for drama class

This looks like it will be perfect for my new high school drama club. The lessons are not too childish so that the high school students will be turned off. No lessons where you pretend to be a melting ice cream cone, lol. Instead, the lessons are designed to open students' eyes to the acting they see all around them. It teaches them to be more observant of how people communicate, using gesture, facial expressions, tone of voice, etc.
Very nice handbook for a beginning drama teacher.

Another winner from Dr. Stevenson

This is basically the "Reader's Digest" version of a much longer, more technical work. Thus, the descriptions of some of the cases are very sketchy. Nevertheless, Stevenson's reputation is impeccable after something like 40 years in this field, and you can be pretty confident that he isn't seriously skewing the facts. He seems to be more up-front than in earlier works in acknowledging that reincarnation is really the only plausible explanation for many of these cases. The book focuses primarily on cases where birthmarks and other physical anomalies match up with injuries suffered in the prior life. The book is well-illustrated with photographs, and some of the cases are truly weird. Put this book together with something like his Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation, and your theology will be sorely challenged if it denies the reality of reincarnation.

Reincarnation enters academia

Ian Stevensons book is a superb scientific exploration into the generally more esoteric realm of reincarnation. He has collected over 2600 reported cases of past-life memories of which 65 detailed reports have been published. It is correct, as one reviewer claims, that these reported cases are primarily from Buddhist, Hindu, African or Native American cultures where such phenomenons are more widely accepted than in the West. But this is natural, says Stevenson, as these cultures more openly will allow a child to speak about a previous life without being disbelieved or rebuked as they may be in the Christian West. Young children are very impressionable and will generally suppress whatever his or her parent or the culture does not permit them to believe in. Thus, it is reasonable to assume that there will be more such claims in these non-Western cultures to conduct such studies. One cannot accuse Stevenson of not following a scientific approach (instrumental injunction, direct apprehension, communal confirmation), his book brims with extremly detailed reports from children whose memories have been carefully collected and matched with the data of their former identity, profession, residence, and the way they died. If this is not believable science, what is? If reincarnation is a new concept to you, read and judge for yourself. If you already believe in reincarnation, read and get more rational reason to state your case.

A mix of good and bad stuff

This is definitely NOT the best book from dr. Ian Stevenson. The author has lost his skepticism and most of his scientific impartiality. The majority of cases included in this book lacks strong evidence sugestive of reincarnation, with the exception of a few very good cases. Because of these good cases, the book is still worth its value, but overall it is not a great work. "Children who remember previous lives" is a much better book from the same author.

About the Author

Richard and Jo Anne Vacca are professors emeriti in the Department of Teaching, Leadership, and Curriculum

Studies in the College and Graduate School of Education, Health, and Human Services at Kent State University. They met as undergraduate English majors at SUNY–Albany and have been partners ever since. Jo Anne taught middle school language arts in New York and Illinois and received her doctorate from Boston University. Rich taught high school English and earned his doctorate at Syracuse University. He is a past president of the International Reading Association. The Vacca's live in Vero Beach, Florida, where they golf, volunteer, and walk their toy poodles, Tiger Lily and Gigi Marie. They especially enjoy visiting and traveling with their daughter, Courtney; son-in-law, Gary; and grandsons, Simon, Max, and Joe.

Maryann Mraz is an associate professor in the Reading and Elementary Education Department of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC). She earned her Ph.D . from Kent state University under the guidance of Jo Anne and Rich Vacca. Maryann is a board member of the Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers (ALER) and the author of numerous articles, chapters, and instructional materials on Literacy education, including the co-authored books The Literacy Coach's Companion and Independent Reading. She teaches graduate courses in literacy education and provides professional development workshops to teachers and literacy coaches.

Ok book

So this book was required for my class,and it covers the basic content literacy issues with no surprises. The pages are super-flimsy and I really wish I had gone with the earlier, cheaper edition--I don't know what exactly was updated, but $100 is pretty steep for a run-of-the-mill book.

Overpriced POC

A stupidly expensive book. $130 to buy the hardcopy, $78 to rent, and $98 for the Kindle version! Are you kidding me? This is a required book for an online class and it is absurd how much textbook companies are trying to charge future teachers. Practices like this are the reason why education in this country is going down the s***ter.

Great book

I bought this book for a content area reading glass and I will admit I was not looking forward to it at all. I usually avoid reading my texts for classes if it can be at all helped. However this book is different. It is well written and provides an array of excellent, pertinent information for a budding teacher like myself. I can even see in a few years down the road I will want to revisit the content and refresh myself. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants more information about teaching reading in their content area.
